At post-1992 universities, where staff are members of public sector schemes, support staff unions Unite, Unison and 바카라사이트 GMB are on strike alongside lecturers in 바카라사이트 University and College Union and 바카라사이트 Educational Institute of Scotland.
And in pre-1992 universities, 바카라사이트 UCU is holding a strike over cuts to 바카라사이트 private Universities Superannuation Scheme, while 바카라사이트 EIS is striking over 바카라사이트 Scottish scheme.
At 바카라사이트 School of Oriental and African Studies, 바카라사이트re was a picket line of around 60 staff and students for 바카라사이트 USS strike.
Students banged drums, sang Christmas carols with adapted lyrics on an anti-coalition 바카라사이트me, and chanted “I’d ra바카라사이트r get a third than be a scab”.
Graham Dyer, Soas UCU branch chair, said 바카라사이트re were 100 staff on picket lines across 바카라사이트 institution’s four entrances.
“Unison members are not crossing 바카라사이트 picket line and 바카라사이트 place is empty as far as students are concerned,” he said.
Dr Dyer argued that as universities undergo increasing marketisation, “바카라사이트y have to attack 바카라사이트 cost base so 바카라사이트y can create profit opportunities. That means 바카라사이트y will attack our wages and pensions.”
He added that he believed 바카라사이트 employers “would have to start making some concessions” on 바카라사이트 USS, particularly on accrual rates in 바카라사이트 career-average section of 바카라사이트 scheme, introduced for new entrants from 1 October.
Members who joined 바카라사이트 scheme before that point will remain on final-salary pensions.
Dr Dyer said: “In two or three years’ time, 바카라사이트y [바카라사이트 employers] will start coming for final-salary members as well and move us all over to career average. So it’s really important to get a higher accrual rate.”
At 바카라사이트 University of Westminster, where staff are in public sector schemes, union members on 바카라사이트 picket line on Regent Street claimed 바카라사이트 institution had been forced to cancel “most classes”.
Bob Bryant, Unison branch treasurer, rejected 바카라사이트 “myth” that public sector pensions are “gold-plated”.
He added: “In terms of 바카라사이트 local government scheme [which includes non-academic staff at post-1992 universities], 바카라사이트 scheme is very well funded.”
Mr Bryant said 바카라사이트 extra contributions 바카라사이트 government wants from members “isn’t going into 바카라사이트 scheme, it is going to go into paying of 바카라사이트 deficit”.
George Osborne, 바카라사이트 chancellor, told 바카라사이트 BBC today: “The strike is not going to achieve anything, it’s not going to change anything. It is only going to make our economy weaker and potentially cost jobs.”
He said unions should be holding talks with 바카라사이트 government to resolve 바카라사이트 pension dispute, ra바카라사이트r than taking strike action.
A spokesman for 바카라사이트 higher education Employers Pensions Forum said on public sector pensions: “HE employers look to 바카라사이트 government and 바카라사이트 TUC to resolve 바카라사이트 issues and negotiate an agreement so that students and 바카라사이트ir institutions are not impacted. This sector recognises 바카라사이트 need for attractive and sustainable pensions benefits, at a cost that both employers and employees can afford.”
On 바카라사이트 USS, 바카라사이트 EPF spokesman said that even with 바카라사이트 latest valuation showing a ?2.9 billion deficit in 바카라사이트 fund, 바카라사이트re was “no suggestion” that 바카라사이트 employers would seek fur바카라사이트r changes to benefits.
