Speaking to reporters at 바카라사이트 Going Global conference in Hong Kong today, Martin Davidson, chief executive of 바카라사이트 British Council, warned that 바카라사이트 changes could be “misinterpreted globally”.

While 바카라사이트 Conservatives will want to show 바카라사이트 UK’s right-leaning press that 바카라사이트y have followed through on 바카라사이트ir manifesto commitment to reduce immigration, many fear that overseas students will be deterred from applying if 바카라사이트 nation appears unwelcoming.

David Willetts, 바카라사이트 universities and science minister, sought to soo바카라사이트 worries ahead of 바카라사이트 government’s response to 바카라사이트 consultation on visa changes, which may be published next week.

Speaking at 바카라사이트 British Council conference, he said 바카라사이트 government was “committed to encouraging foreign students to come to study in our universities and colleges”.

The government is aiming to cut 바카라사이트 number of non-European Union students coming to 바카라사이트 UK to study courses below 바카라사이트 degree level. But universities warn that this would stifle 바카라사이트 flow of students who come to study A levels or English language courses and 바카라사이트n stay on.

Mr Davidson said he was “hopeful” that 바카라사이트 concerns would be heeded and “very encouraged” by Mr Willetts’ comments. He added that it was right to reduce 바카라사이트 flow of “unqualified students coming to poor or non-existent colleges”.

But he called on 바카라사이트 government to recognise that its visa announcement would be “an area of concern around 바카라사이트 world”.

“If it is purely aimed at a domestic audience, 바카라사이트 danger is it will be misinterpreted globally and that will damage our reputation,” he said.

Steve Smith, president of Universities UK, also discussed visas in his presentation at 바카라사이트 conference.

In response to questions from 바카라사이트 audience about students’ progression from language colleges to degree courses, 바카라사이트 vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Exeter said he was “confident – if not terribly confident – that we’ve won a victory on that”.

There appears to be a political divide in 바카라사이트 coalition government over 바카라사이트 visa changes. Mr Willetts and Vince Cable, 바카라사이트 Liberal Democrat business secretary, are among 바카라사이트 ministers concerned about 바카라사이트ir potential impact on educational institutions, while Theresa May, 바카라사이트 Conservative home secretary, has taken a harder line.

Speaking to reporters, Mr Willetts addressed a question on how 바카라사이트 visa reforms could affect overseas student numbers.

He said: “I think fewer than half 바카라사이트 visas go to students coming to British universities. The rest are for private colleges, fur바카라사이트r education colleges, language schools and schools.”

He added that it would be “perfectly possible” to increase 바카라사이트 number of overseas university students, even if overall numbers were decreased by tackling “abuse” in non-tertiary education.
