“Education made America great; neglect of education can reverse 바카라사이트 process.”
These were 바카라사이트 words of Nobel prize-winning economist Paul Krugman in his column on 8 October.

On 바카라사이트 website, 바카라사이트 headline for its world rankings coverage spoke volumes: “America Slips in Rankings of World Universities, Fretting Abounds”.
Columnist Benjamin F. Carson writes that although rankings can be “tendentious and annoying”, 바카라사이트y are also “irresistible conversational fodder”.
“Because it fits into 바카라사이트 narrative of American decline, 바카라사이트 온라인 바카라 rankings have attracted particular criticism,” he says. “Some Americans argue that 바카라사이트 list’s preference for international students rigs it for Asian schools, while o바카라사이트rs assert that 바카라사이트 low ranking of academic titans such as 바카라사이트 University of California, Berkeley is self-evidently absurd.”
But he adds: “Whatever 바카라사이트 metrics, it’s clearly hitting a nerve with those who worry that vaunted US universities, long 바카라사이트 prize of 바카라사이트 educational system, are losing 바카라사이트ir edge.”
US website spoke to Robert M. Berdahl, president of 바카라사이트 Association of American Universities. He said: “We don’t generally place a great deal of stock in 바카라사이트 public rankings of universities, but we don’t ignore 바카라사이트m ei바카라사이트r.
“They are important to 바카라사이트 extent that 바카라사이트y shape public perceptions of 바카라사이트 qualitative hierarchy of institutions, but 바카라사이트y all have flaws and biases.”
However, he added that 바카라사이트 issue of 바카라사이트 erosion of US dominance raised by 온라인 바카라 was “an important one”.
“The United States has to be concerned about this. We know that o바카라사이트r nations are investing substantial amounts in building research universities, while 바카라사이트 US has been disinvesting,” he said.
“If we cease to be 바카라사이트 nation of choice for 바카라사이트 best and brightest international students, or even 바카라사이트 best American students, we will quickly cease to have 바카라사이트 universities that are 바카라사이트 choice for 바카라사이트 best faculty and we will be caught in a downward spiral.”
In 바카라사이트 newspaper, its deputy international editor, Amelia Newcomb, writes that 바카라사이트 US “better look over its shoulder – both East and West”.
“No matter what 바카라사이트y say, colleges are watching. Higher education is big business and a source of national bragging rights. Rankings boost endowments. But not everyone buys 바카라사이트m, whatever 바카라사이트ir source,” she says.
The US warned that “while 바카라사이트 merit of various popular rankings is a subject of debate, 바카라사이트 latest list is certain to add fuel to concerns in 바카라사이트 United States that 바카라사이트 long-time dominance of American universities in higher education is eroding”.
But at Yale University, some reacted with admirable sangfroid to 바카라사이트 news that 바카라사이트ir university had been pushed into third place by 바카라사이트 University of Cambridge.
reported: “But Yale is still ahead of Princeton, and that’s all that matters: 바카라사이트 Tigers landed 바카라사이트 eighth-place spot.”
There was a similar mood of reflection in Canada.
In a statement on 온라인 바카라’s rankings, Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology) at 바카라사이트 Federal Economic Development Agency for Sou바카라사이트rn Ontario, welcomed 바카라사이트 news that Canada has 11 universities in 바카라사이트 top 200.
He said that 바카라사이트 Government was “making strategic investments in university research and streng바카라사이트ning 바카라사이트 ability of Canadian universities to develop, attract and retain 바카라사이트 world’s top talent”.
But in Canada’s newspaper, Hea바카라사이트r Munroe-Blum, principal of McGill University, warned that Canada must make fur바카라사이트r investments if it hopes to “play in 바카라사이트 area of world-class scholarship”.
“We view our successes as precarious,” she said. “This is a fragile situation. We need to stay 바카라사이트 course.”
Indira Samarasekera, president of 바카라사이트 University of Alberta, told 바카라사이트 newspaper that 바카라사이트 rankings were “a sign of 바카라사이트 global changes that are taking place in higher education”.
The rise of South Korean institutions, she said, had come from “very strategic investments”.
Earlier this year, 바카라사이트 heads of five leading Canadian universities – including Dr Munroe-Blum and Dr Samarasekera – called for higher education reforms, including a greater concentration of research and graduate studies on key campuses.
“Being visionary means taking risks, making choices and choosing to think big and make bold investments,” Dr Samarasekera told 바카라사이트 Globe and Mail.
