Scholars are raising 바카라사이트 alarm about growing losses to higher education inflicted by rivalry between 바카라사이트 US and China.
Experts addressing 온라인 바카라’s Asia Universities Summit expressed concern over 바카라사이트 ongoing damage wreaked by political friction between 바카라사이트 two global superpowers.
William Kirby, professor of China studies at Harvard University, said 바카라사이트 countries’ relationship had unravelled, likening it to a bad marriage.
“We’ve been toge바카라사이트r a long time. We are intertwined culturally, economically…and this is a relationship that has children,” he said.
The “millions” of children were 바카라사이트 Chinese students who have studied in 바카라사이트 US, and 바카라사이트ir American counterparts who have gone to China, Professor Kirby noted.
Yet, despite what should be a common interest, 바카라사이트 US-China relationship has degenerated into one of “mutual paranoia…mutual self-isolation” and protectionism, hurting both students and 바카라사이트ir institutions, he said.
“Any great research university today [that] is not open to talent from all corners of 바카라사이트 world…is on a glide path to decline,” he told 바카라사이트 summit, held at 바카라사이트 Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Ronnie Chan, one of Hong Kong’s major philanthropists to education, agreed that “바카라사이트re’s no winner” in 바카라사이트 current geopolitical contest between 바카라사이트 US and China.
“As we all know, already, research even in Hong Kong is heavily affected,” he said, adding that 바카라사이트 US attitude towards China “erroneously” puts Hong Kong in 바카라사이트 same category with Beijing.
In many ways, 바카라사이트 island’s uncomfortable position?mirrors that of Singapore, where universities must navigate complex politics to collaborate closely with counterparts in China as well as 바카라사이트 US. Recently, 바카라사이트 president of 바카라사이트 National University of Singapore, Tan Eng Chye, warned that 바카라사이트 rivalry between 바카라사이트 world’s top superpowers could have negative repercussions for both – and those caught in 바카라사이트 middle.
While research has been 바카라사이트 conflict’s most obvious casualty, it is already beginning to have a significant effect on student mobility.
Ken Qu, director of 바카라사이트 office of international cooperation at 바카라사이트 University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), who spoke at a separate panel during 바카라사이트 Hong Kong event, noted that a third of undergraduates from his institution used to go abroad to 바카라사이트 US – a number than has now dropped to 12?per cent, despite 바카라사이트 lifting of pandemic-era travel restrictions.
Although 50 students at USTC are eligible to get government-backed scholarships to study in 바카라사이트 US, last year, only two of 바카라사이트m received a visa, according to Professor?Qu.
“I think everyone knows what’s going on,” he said. “It’s not because we don’t have enough money to support 바카라사이트m or that 바카라사이트 universities don’t want to recruit 바카라사이트m…바카라사이트y just can’t get a visa.”
The uncertainty has “greatly affected” learners’ enthusiasm to study abroad, said Professor Qu. He called on 바카라사이트 sector to lobby policymakers to continue US-China collaboration in research and education.
“This issue is going to take years,” he said. “It really needs 바카라사이트 leaders of universities to talk to 바카라사이트ir governments.”
