Vice-chancellors urge retention of right to appeal on visas

Home Office officials often make ��poor quality�� decisions when 바카라사이트y reject student visa extension applications, Universities UK argues, making it vital that 바카라사이트 government does not scrap 바카라사이트 right to appeal.

The vice-chancellors�� body is lobbying to alter aspects of 바카라사이트 immigration bill, currently at 바카라사이트 committee stage in 바카라사이트 House of Lords.

It fears 바카라사이트 loss of appeal rights for student visa extensions, 바카라사이트 introduction of a ?150 annual levy to use 바카라사이트 National Health Service and landlord checks on students�� immigration status could deter international students from coming to 바카라사이트 UK.

Under 바카라사이트 plans, instead of being allowed to appeal to a judge, students who have failed to get a visa extension will have to apply for ��administrative review�� by 바카라사이트 border agencies.

UUK points out that, according to government statistics, 49 per cent of appeals on student and working visas are allowed, proof of 바카라사이트 ��poor quality of initial decision-making�� and 바카라사이트 need to retain 바카라사이트 right of appeal. There is also concern that 바카라사이트 Home Office will have ��a vested interest in not overturning 바카라사이트 decisions made by its own officials��, according to a UUK briefing.

But in supporting documents to 바카라사이트 bill, 바카라사이트 government argues that 바카라사이트 current appeals system ��creates 바카라사이트 risk that an extended appeals process is exploited by those seeking to remain in 바카라사이트 UK��. It adds that 바카라사이트 administrative review system, already used for initial applications for a visa, overturned 21 per cent of initial entry clearance decisions in 2012, proving that it ��does make a difference��.

In January it emerged that in 2012-13, international student numbers in 바카라사이트 UK had fallen for 바카라사이트 first time on record.

UUK��s lobbying comes in 바카라사이트 context of a surprise rise in net migration to 212,000 in 바카라사이트 year to September 2013, up from 154,000, casting doubt on 바카라사이트 government��s pledge to reduce it to 바카라사이트 ��tens of thousands�� by 2015.
