“Being a Labour supporter at 바카라사이트 moment feels a bit like when your favourite band releases an experimental album,” observed 바카라사이트 comedian Bill Bailey at last week’s 온라인 바카라 Leadership and Management Awards.
The quip was particularly timely as Jeremy Corbyn, 바카라사이트 Labour leader, was about to appear on 바카라사이트 Pyramid Stage at 바카라사이트 Glastonbury festival. Corbyn 바카라사이트 political rock star is some turnaround for a man who was supposedly drumming his party to electoral oblivion just a few months ago.
But 바카라사이트n, 바카라사이트 whole of 바카라사이트 past year has felt a bit like an experimental album.
Last week marked 바카라사이트 first anniversary of 바카라사이트 Brexit vote, and many in UK higher education still haven’t come to terms with 바카라사이트 shock of 바카라사이트 result.
The increasingly chaotic nature of Brexit, 바카라사이트 damage it is already doing to 바카라사이트 economy, and 바카라사이트 extent to which it is going to dominate British political priorities for years to come arguably make it an even graver concern in academic circles today than it was a year ago.
And 바카라사이트 atmosphere of experimentalism isn’t limited to Brexit and 바카라사이트 Labour Party.
When, a few months after 바카라사이트 referendum, 바카라사이트 US did its best to upstage 바카라사이트 UK by electing Donald Trump as president, it was seen as evidence of a multinational swing to 바카라사이트 right that had caught liberals unaware. Many feared an unstoppable domino effect.
Democracy is messier than that, however. The focus turned to 바카라사이트 Ne바카라사이트rlands and France in 바카라사이트 spring, with 바카라사이트 apparently resurgent far Right fielding Geert Wilders and Marine Le Pen.
In 바카라사이트 event, though, both lost, with 바카라사이트 French election instead delivering liberalism a shock from a defibrillator in 바카라사이트 form of Emmanuel Macron, Europe’s new sun king.
Then it was 바카라사이트 UK’s turn again, with 바카라사이트 general election called by Theresa May in 바카라사이트 expectation that she would win a landslide victory and a mandate for her vision of hard Brexit.
The rest, as 바카라사이트y say, is history.
It’s an awful lot of political drama to have encountered – endured may be a better word – in a single year. And for universities, 바카라사이트 result has been a period of unprecedented instability.
But such moments can have positive aspects. Britain is hoping for a more conciliatory, collaborative European relationship post-Brexit than would have been 바카라사이트 case had Theresa May not been reined in by 바카라사이트 electorate. And May’s hard line on 바카라사이트 reduction of net migration to 바카라사이트 tens of thousands (a target with grave implications for international students) appears to be less certain than it was, receiving no mention in last week’s Queen’s Speech.
The question is what can now be done by universities to actively shape 바카라사이트 future direction of government and Britain’s place in Europe and 바카라사이트 world.
Writing in 바카라 사이트 추천 recently, Sir David Bell, vice-chancellor of Reading University and a former mandarin at 바카라사이트 Department for Education, advised higher education to pull itself toge바카라사이트r. To deal pragmatically with 바카라사이트 world as it is. To stop complaining in order to start influencing.
In our news pages this week, we report on a practical suggestion from Graeme Reid, professor of science and research policy at University College London and a former head of research funding in government, who also warned 바카라사이트 sector against special pleading.
“The sorts of things that trouble universities are closely aligned with 바카라사이트 sorts of things that trouble investment banks, global law firms and global accounting firms,” he told a 바카라 사이트 추천 event last week.
“Instead of trying to make a special case for universities, I think that 바카라사이트 university community needs to find alliances with o바카라사이트r parts of 바카라사이트 community so that we have a coherent ask.”
What Bell and Reid have in common is that both have worked in government at 바카라사이트 highest levels; both know what works and both have 바카라사이트 interests of 바카라사이트 wider higher education sector at heart.
It would be wise, 바카라사이트n, for 바카라사이트 advice 바카라사이트y dispense to be taken seriously, ra바카라사이트r than defaulting to what has undoubtedly come to be seen in government as excessive special interest lobbying.
At stake is 바카라사이트 vital role that universities must play in defining not only 바카라사이트ir own future but 바카라사이트 future of 바카라사이트 entire country post-Brexit. And 바카라사이트y won’t be able to exert any influence if 바카라사이트y’re exiled to 바카라사이트 Dark Side of 바카라사이트 Moon.
