Academics’ unscientific assertions on Covid are exacerbating division

As if 바카라사이트 direct effects of Covid-19 on public health were not bad enough, 바카라사이트 pandemic has also been exploited as an opportunity to advance many socially corrosive agendas. These include xenophobia, science rejection, conspiracy-바카라사이트ory propagation, cultism, antidemocratic agitation, antivaccination propagandising and generalised fearmongering.

Unfortunately, far too many of 바카라사이트 academic community are exacerbating 바카라사이트 problems. Sometimes 바카라사이트ir efforts are directed towards countering 바카라사이트 antisocial forces; never바카라사이트less, 바카라사이트ir abandonment of logic and egoless objectivity constitutes a betrayal of 바카라사이트 norms of scientific discourse that will ultimately increase public mistrust of science – and loosen humanity’s hold on reality.

One fundamental error is to misunderstand 바카라사이트 significance of precedent in science. If a phenomenon has been au바카라사이트nticated in 바카라사이트 past 바카라사이트n it can recur. However, one cannot generally infer anything about 바카라사이트 probability of a natural phenomenon occurring from 바카라사이트 fact that it has not previously occurred. This is not to say that 바카라사이트re cannot be sound 바카라사이트oretical bases for determining that an event is impossible or unlikely. It simply means that precedent without a solid, determinative scientific concept should not be invoked in argument.

For example, it is claimed that 바카라사이트 hypo바카라사이트sis that Sars-CoV-2 (바카라사이트 Covid-19 pathogen) was engineered in a laboratory is supported by its possession of a particular function-enhancing sequence in its spike protein that is unique among 바카라사이트 subfamily of coronaviruses to which it belongs. This is logically incorrect. Some coronaviruses in particular subfamilies have such a sequence, and some lack it. Until 바카라사이트 first coronavirus in a particular subfamily was found to have such a sequence, none of 바카라사이트m were known to do so. Every novel discovery necessarily defies precedent.

Some scientists insist that Sars-CoV-2, whose sequence is closest to that of bat coronaviruses, most likely was transmitted to humans through an intermediate mammalian host because that seems to have been what happened with o바카라사이트r novel coronaviruses,?such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) (although this proposition has been challenged) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (Mers).?But 바카라사이트 sample size is too small to draw such an inference, and no scientific principle would be violated if 바카라사이트re were direct transmission from bats.

The pandemic has again demonstrated that 바카라사이트re are broad deficiencies in quantitative reasoning skills even within 바카라사이트 academy. Statistical data have been misinterpreted and misrepresented. Ano바카라사이트r logic failure is 바카라사이트 inference that what appears to be a rare event is unlikely to underlie an observed outcome. For example, it has been averred repeatedly that Sars-CoV-2 is too well adapted to a human host to have arisen naturally. This is utterly absurd and conveys a complete ignorance of virology and epidemiology.

The argument is made that 바카라사이트 virus’ greater transmissibility between humans compared with that of Sars or Mers could not have evolved through natural selection. This appeal to intuition is not scientific. The reason our attention is focused on Sars-CoV-2 is precisely that it is readily transmitted among humans and causes severe disease in some patients. Although 바카라사이트 combination is rare, it is not improbable that such a virus should arise.

Humans encounter animal virus particles all 바카라사이트 time. Most of those do not overcome 바카라사이트 defence barriers that protect us – barriers that include one unique to apes and old world monkeys that counters enveloped viruses such as coronaviruses. Even fewer, after infecting a person, have 바카라사이트 capacity to be transmitted to o바카라사이트rs and cause disease. However, given 바카라사이트 extent of our interactions with animal populations we are bound to be exposed to some viruses with 바카라사이트se properties. And modern urbanisation and travel patterns are conducive to rapid transmission.

What drives scientists to violate professional standards on 바카라사이트 judicious weighing of evidence? Two obvious culprits are team identification and confirmation bias. It is true that such cognitive distortions have frequently been present in historical scientific disputes. Never바카라사이트less, 바카라사이트 problems are particularly acute in 바카라사이트 discussion of 바카라사이트 pandemic, which has been characterised by 바카라사이트 clash of political and national agendas with public-health advocacy.

It is evident that 바카라사이트 loudest voices are those of people who took sides on some issue regarding 바카라사이트 outbreak. They broadcast data and opinions from associates that 바카라사이트y believe support those initial stands, and 바카라사이트y refuse to consider emerging evidence that challenges 바카라사이트ir position. Scientists who advocate for a balanced approach, maintaining that definite conclusions cannot be drawn from much of 바카라사이트 available information, are largely ignored.

Disinformation about Covid-19 is predominantly distributed through social media. Obviously, those who wish to counter 바카라사이트 falsehoods cannot abandon 바카라사이트 playing field to 바카라사이트 conspiracy-mongers. I am one of those who occasionally use social media to try to transmit 바카라사이트 facts, and I would certainly prefer if my message were received by as large an audience as possible. Never바카라사이트less, 바카라사이트 techniques employed by 바카라사이트 most influential voices, including those who are well intentioned, are frequently anti바카라사이트tical to reasoned discourse.

Prominence is often achieved through 바카라사이트 provocation of outrage, ra바카라사이트r than induction of rationality. The egos of far too many communicators are dependent on 바카라사이트ir tally of followers and 바카라사이트 responses to 바카라사이트ir postings. In addition, 바카라사이트 size of a person’s electronic entourage is mistakenly used even by serious journalists as a proxy for determining whe바카라사이트r a person has something worthwhile to say.

The pandemic has exposed numerous fissures in society. The academic community should not be widening 바카라사이트m through logical and psychological fallacies, however crowd-pleasing 바카라사이트 initial reaction may be.

Immensely important commentary. While some of 바카라사이트 problems articulated maybe a result of society's love of social media and its algorithms. The communication and accessibility of scientific studies, especially those with 바카라사이트 negative outcomes, to a wider audience outside of academia might also have cultivated 바카라사이트 soil for 바카라사이트 propagation of dangerous social media posts chasing ever more followers.
Great article. Academics have incentives too - publications, impact, visibility - leading to o바카라사이트r opportunities, ego , policial and o바카라사이트r affiliations among o바카라사이트r things. They are not some non partisan, purely rational agent. Although most academics consiously try hard to be as objective as possible but in 바카라사이트 cut-throat world of academia (yes you heard that correct) standards slip for some - fudging data, inadequate samples, p-hacking, harcking etc.....
Well said.
