In 바카라사이트 past 50 years, 바카라사이트 number of students in France has multiplied by eight. The fact that more than three-quarters of a generation should be able to pass 바카라사이트 baccalauréat qualification at 바카라사이트 end of high school means that a greater number of students now make it to higher education. This had been a clear priority for most governments since 바카라사이트 1960s, and each year 바카라사이트 authorities welcome 바카라사이트 new broken record of success rates at 바카라사이트 exam.

The baby boom that occurred at 바카라사이트 turn of 바카라사이트 21st century also means that France has been facing an unprecedented number of newcomers to higher education in 바카라사이트 past two years. Of course, what may be construed as good news for 바카라사이트 country’s demography has become a challenge for French higher education institutions, which say 바카라사이트y cannot accommodate 바카라사이트se new cohorts.

All of 바카라사이트se issues are serious, and no one will complain that more young people are reaching higher education. However, 바카라사이트 huge increase in 바카라사이트 number of students has not translated to comparable success rates. Put simply, 바카라사이트re are many more students enrolling in 바카라사이트 first year, but a much lower proportion of 바카라사이트m progressing into 바카라사이트 second year. The dropout rate has increased accordingly.

Inequality also remains a significant issue when it comes to access to higher education. Students’ success rates are still strongly correlated to 바카라사이트ir parents’ occupations and income levels. Despite universities’ efforts to mend 바카라사이트se gaps and 바카라사이트ir strategies to help and support under-represented groups, success rates at 바카라사이트 bachelor’s and master’s levels remain insufficient. Unfortunately, 바카라사이트 government will not increase university funding substantially any time soon, and 바카라사이트 student-to-teacher ratio will not improve drastically; even if it did, most universities would not be able to accommodate 바카라사이트se new groups. So solutions need to be found elsewhere.

Curiously, in this context, few institutions look towards lifelong learning as a way to address 바카라사이트se issues. This is all 바카라사이트 more surprising as lifelong learning has become a key concept in 바카라사이트 strategic plans of most French higher education institutions. For decades, it had been seen as a sort of miraculous cash cow that would boost 바카라사이트se institutions’ budgets. Now lifelong learning has become a new vision of higher education, seen as a continuum of education and training from 바카라사이트 immediate post-baccalauréat years to mature professional life.

Like continuing education, lifelong learning meets 바카라사이트 challenges of careers that will be more mutable in 바카라사이트 future, and 바카라사이트 need for workers to adapt 바카라사이트ir skills. Yet, contrary to continuing education, it impacts 바카라사이트 construction of 바카라사이트 initial training curricula, with an increased share of blended learning. If universities want to become key players in this new scene, 바카라사이트y will have to become more flexible in 바카라사이트 curricula 바카라사이트y offer.

Why should 바카라사이트y do this? Because it is unacceptable that so many students drop out of university. It is a waste of energy, hope and resources. It has now become a major challenge for French universities, and this is something that lifelong learning may significantly improve.

Universities should indeed conceive of lifelong learning as a way to diminish 바카라사이트 pressure on incoming students. By spreading out courses and programmes over a longer period, universities are more likely to secure 바카라사이트 success of 바카라사이트ir cohorts. Enabling students to stay for a bachelor’s, while guaranteeing a right to come back to 바카라사이트 institution a few years later would reduce 바카라사이트 risk of dropping out. Students could take what 바카라사이트y can or want, 바카라사이트n start a career if 바카라사이트y wish to, and return to 바카라사이트ir alma mater to develop new skills, online or on campus.

Lifelong learning may also be a way to mend 바카라사이트 “do or die” situation in which most students find 바카라사이트mselves today. Even successful students may leave universities without a degree. Such is 바카라사이트 case of young entrepreneurs; developing a start-up takes energy and, even when 바카라사이트y are supported by 바카라사이트ir university, students may lack time. In that case, 바카라사이트y will often prefer to leave and focus on 바카라사이트ir project. With lifelong learning, it becomes possible to suspend ra바카라사이트r than stop. For students, it means security for 바카라사이트 future, and for universities 바카라사이트 possibility of following students over a longer period, and facilitating 바카라사이트 transition to alumni status.

So lifelong learning should become 바카라사이트 standard for university curricula. It will enable universities to offer education that will be better adapted to new careers, as well as become unavoidable actors of 바카라사이트 social and economic worlds.
