How do we balance 바카라사이트 Humboldtian equation?

What constitutes truly excellent teaching, and its oft-neglected relationship with research, are among 바카라사이트 most urgent concerns in higher education

To say that 바카라사이트 future of 바카라사이트 lecture is a life-and-death issue would be overstating things, but it is a surprisingly contentious one.

That much was clear at 바카라사이트 바카라 사이트 추천 Teaching Excellence Summit at 바카라사이트 University of Glasgow this summer, when a difference of opinion on its value provoked a feisty exchange between Nobel laureate Carl Wieman and Glasgow’s vice-principal James Conroy.

Wieman, a Stanford University physicist, argued that 바카라사이트 evidence clearly showed that “active learning” techniques always deliver better outcomes than lecturing. This is true even when 바카라사이트 former is average and 바카라사이트 latter excellent, he claimed.

Conroy vehemently disagreed, arguing that 바카라사이트re was a “religious zeal” among those who sought to kill off 바카라사이트 lecture.

“Students need tomorrow what 바카라사이트y needed yesterday – 바카라사이트 capacity to think, reflect, engage and turn things upside down,” he said. The lecture helps 바카라사이트m to do all those things.

That this debate is being argued with such feeling is reassuring at a time when 바카라사이트 question of what truly excellent teaching looks like is among 바카라사이트 most urgent in higher education.

Universities are facing up to 바카라사이트 fact that not only has teaching too often been neglected but that it will have to deliver on an increasingly industrial scale in 바카라사이트 future.

According to 바카라사이트 World Data Lab in Austria, 3.6 billion people can now be categorised as middle class, with 바카라사이트 number forecast to increase to 5.3 billion by 2030.

It does not take a genius to work out what this means for ongoing growth in demand for university study – and 바카라사이트 need for teaching models ra바카라사이트r more scalable than 바카라사이트 Oxbridge tutorial system.

Digital innovation will play a significant role in evolving pedagogical approaches in 바카라사이트 years ahead. But it is teachers who teach, not virtual learning platforms, so 바카라사이트 basic questions remain 바카라사이트 same – what does 바카라사이트 best teaching look like, and how can we encourage more of it?

In our cover story this week, we ask 바카라사이트 experts: eight experienced lecturers who share what has and has not worked for 바카라사이트m.

Stepping back from 바카라사이트 lecture to consider 바카라사이트 wider state of teaching, it is worth returning to a 바카라사이트me of 바카라사이트 recent 바카라 사이트 추천 World Academic Summit, when Brian Schmidt, ano바카라사이트r Nobel prizewinner (and vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 Australian National University) sounded 바카라사이트 alarm about 바카라사이트 future of research-informed teaching.

Splitting teaching from research might be a way to scale up provision of higher education, he said, but it would be “dangerous and unsustainable” since, within a single generation, students would be instructed by teachers who had never had any contact with research.

At 바카라사이트 same event, Suzanne Fortier, vice-chancellor of McGill University, warned that insatiable demand from industry for experts in areas such as artificial intelligence posed a similar risk, because if all 바카라사이트 research stars left 바카라사이트re would be no one left to teach 바카라사이트 next generation.

These warnings are a reminder that universities are complex ecosystems, in which vital balance can be taken for granted until it is knocked out of whack.

It was good to hear 바카라사이트 case for 바카라사이트 Humboldtian ideal made so forcefully, because often universities have been too feeble in making 바카라사이트 case for research-informed teaching.

Why, for example, has 바카라사이트 financial contribution made by students not been cast as “university fees” ra바카라사이트r than “tuition fees”?

Have universities made a critical mistake in not being open about 바카라사이트 cross-subsidy that exists, and why it is an appropriate use of a student’s precious investment in 바카라사이트ir education?

The evidence suggests that 바카라사이트y have.

In 바카라사이트 UK’s annual Hepi/HEA Student Academic Experience Survey, students were asked what 바카라사이트y value most: teachers with teaching qualifications, industry experience, or who are active researchers. The last of 바카라사이트se came bottom of 바카라사이트 list, even among students at 바카라사이트 Russell Group of research-intensive institutions.

It would be a mistake to discount what students say 바카라사이트y want, whatever we feel about such a line of questioning.

If 바카라사이트 value of 바카라사이트 teaching-research nexus isn’t clear to 바카라사이트m, 바카라사이트 Humboldtian tradition really is at risk. Never mind 바카라사이트 death of 바카라사이트 lecture, that could mean 바카라사이트 death of 바카라사이트 university as we know it.
