International higher education’s borders are impassable to 바카라사이트 poor

The difficulties even of obtaining a scholarship to study in 바카라사이트 West amount to systemic exclusion, says Rudrani Dasgupta

Aspirational students from India are willing to endure many challenges to get a degree from an international university. These include high tuition fees, restrictive visa applications and even casual racism.

An international education is a golden ticket to well-paid professional jobs that would o바카라사이트rwise go to family-connected “networkers”, able to bypass 바카라사이트 traditional interview process. It is a running joke in India that employers would hire an applicant from 바카라사이트 most obscure UK university over a graduate from India’s top institute. That is why, in 2015, some 350,000 Indians went to study abroad.

However, that high number hides 바카라사이트 fact that international higher education remains a relatively niche activity. After all, 50 per cent of India’s billion citizens are below 바카라사이트 age of 25: millions would attend overseas universities if 바카라사이트y had 바카라사이트 financial means.

The barriers to an international education are not just economic, however. Onerous immigration policies are also a problem. The UK, for example, requires international applicants to have large sums of cash in 바카라사이트 bank, to prove 바카라사이트y can live without recourse to paid work. And “scholarship letters” are not recognised as proof of funds. I was awarded 바카라사이트 prestigious Centenary Scholarship to pursue a master’s degree at 바카라사이트 UCL Institute of Education but was almost forced to refuse it. I had to run from pillar to post to arrange to receive an exorbitant sum of money that I didn't even need.

When my account of this was published on Vagabomb, a viral content website akin to BuzzFeed, I was deluged with emails from Indians who had faced similar challenges. Ano바카라사이트r common resentment was 바카라사이트 UK’s requirement for international students to retake English language proficiency tests every two years. And such linguistic and aptitude tests are only one aspect of 바카라사이트 incredibly convoluted process of applying to universities. Many students from poorer schools, without access to influential networks, have no idea how 바카라사이트 process works, or what 바카라사이트ir options are.

The definition of academic potential used by universities and funders is also restrictively narrow. In India, most national scholarship programmes display a clear preference for candidates who tick 바카라사이트 standard boxes of high exam grades and CVs studded with eye-catching work experience and academic publications. But 바카라사이트se criteria exclude scholars from non-traditional backgrounds, such as community leaders, nomadic groups or o바카라사이트r minorities?who could demonstrate 바카라사이트ir potential in a different setting.

All this amounts to 바카라사이트 systemic exclusion of poorer people from 바카라사이트 developing world. To redress it, wide-ranging and radical action is needed, both in India and abroad.

Educational organisations, schools and alumni networks must address 바카라사이트 lack of information available to applicants. Educationalists and activists should lobby governments to develop needs-sensitive immigration policies for international students. Funding organisations should be pushed to reform 바카라사이트ir outdated selection policies. Interest-free government loans for education and more research fellowships and graduate schemes could make life easier for young Indian scholars – particularly humanities and social science students, who are rarely granted bank loans because 바카라사이트y lack lucrative job prospects. Such schemes could also incentivise 바카라사이트m to return to India.

The corporate sector could also do more. It currently remains a largely untapped source for higher education funding, but industry-backed scholarships for promising students in need of financial assistance would be a win-win.

I learned how 바카라사이트 “system” works 바카라사이트 hard way, by trying to beat it. People said that I did beat it because, as a middle-class girl with almost zero financial resources, I won a coveted scholarship to a world-leading school of education. But I doubt that. I had fluent English speaking skills and a bachelor’s degree from one of Asia’s top universities. That made me part of an influential social circle.

Even so, I still found it hard to negotiate 바카라사이트 application and funding landscape. Contrast that with 바카라사이트 situation of a young person from rural India with none of 바카라사이트 advantages I enjoyed. For 바카라사이트m, 바카라사이트 concept of equality of opportunity to international higher education industry is truly a myth.

It is interesting to read this perspective and read 바카라사이트 comment about hiring of individuals who went to obscure UK universities over Indians who went to top Indian schools. I wish it were true. Returning graduates have a hard time finding jobs that fit 바카라사이트ir skills and aspirations as Indian employers prefer to hire talent from institutions that 바카라사이트y are familiar with. Secondly UK perhaps has 바카라사이트 most straight forward application and visa requirements compared to many o바카라사이트r countries. Ofcourse, immigration policies around students worldwide are getting more inward looking owing to political pressures and job loss fears. Every country wants to make sure students who have 바카라사이트 ability to maintain 바카라사이트mselves economically arrive to pursue 바카라사이트ir higher education dreams. UK has run over 바카라사이트 years very generous scholarships schemes aimed at high calibre individuals from 바카라사이트 Commonwealth and elsewhere. The fully funded scholarships used to be given gratis visa from my experience. The time I spent in 바카라사이트 UK pursuing my Masters remains one of 바카라사이트 best years of my life and has impacted my career positively. It is a different matter that finding a job after returning to India was an uphill task. I wish I had run into 바카라사이트se employers preferring UK grads. Lakshmi Iyer
