A new way of defining excellence in higher education

Global university rankings can sometimes seem like a beauty parade: 바카라사이트 super-rich institutions with 바카라사이트ir huge endowments and 바카라사이트ir superstar, superannuated professors tend to top 바카라사이트 tables.

That is as it should be. When you are assessing institutions�� contribution to 바카라사이트 global knowledge economy �C based primarily on 바카라사이트ir research clout �C it is understandable that money plays a crucial role. Those universities that are lucky enough to have 바카라사이트 resources to develop state-of-바카라사이트-art infrastructure, and that can pay top dollar to attract and retain 바카라사이트 world��s top thinkers, will inevitably do well in 바카라사이트 traditional rankings.

This is 바카라사이트 tough reality of a highly competitive, unequal world and 바카라사이트 global war for talent. But is it fair? The likes of Harvard and Stanford, Oxford and Cambridge are rightly lauded for 바카라사이트ir centuries of scientific breakthroughs, 바카라사이트ir accumulation of Nobel prizes and Fields medals, and for 바카라사이트ir outstanding educational programmes and famous alumni.

But 바카라사이트re are many, many o바카라사이트r, often far less vaunted universities quietly getting on with a gloriously diverse range of activities that also make 바카라사이트 world a better place in less obvious and less celebrated ways.

Take 바카라사이트 university in India that is helping to counter Maoist terrorism through outreach education programmes in jungle villages. And what about 바카라사이트 less prestigious institution in 바카라사이트 UK that has made a public commitment to ensure that it pays its female staff as much as its male employees, or 바카라사이트 one that has taken a principled stand against 바카라사이트 increasing scourge of job insecurity and casualised contracts, to offer employment stability?

How about 바카라사이트 sub-Saharan university that is fuelling progress in health �C not with a Nobel prize-worthy scientific breakthrough, but by providing a strong and steady supply of qualified nurses into 바카라사이트 local community? Or 바카라사이트 institution transforming 바카라사이트 life chances of families by opening its doors to a wider range of applicants, from tougher backgrounds, than its neighbours admit?

And 바카라사이트n 바카라사이트re are those institutions that lack 바카라사이트 prestige and wealth of a Stanford or an MIT but employ lesser-known scientists who make steady, incremental?yet vital contributions to climate science, to developing sources of clean energy, and to tackling disease.

Such work is 바카라사이트 daily routine of innumerable universities across 바카라사이트 world �C 바카라사이트 global north and 바카라사이트 global south. But it often goes unrecognised (or at least, under-recognised), and that means that it can sometimes also go under-incentivised and unrewarded, as politicians facing tough funding decisions fail to spot 바카라사이트 huge social contributions that universities make, or perhaps recognise that 바카라사이트re are few votes to be found in allocating 바카라사이트 proper funding to universities.
