Scientific breakthroughs: it takes a village

The greater prominence enjoyed by scientists during 바카라사이트 Covid-19 pandemic has led to some individuals gaining a high profile �C with 바카라사이트 attendant praise and demonisation that this can bring. But 바카라사이트se public figures are just 바카라사이트 visible tip of a huge iceberg of effort taking place to combat 바카라사이트 pandemic.

To convert one bright idea into 7.5 billion doses of vaccine will take a huge team of people. This includes not just 바카라사이트 lab team developing and testing 바카라사이트 vaccine, but also 바카라사이트 animal care staff enabling 바카라사이트 pre-clinical studies, 바카라사이트 safety staff maintaining a safe environment to work with a potentially fatal pathogen, 바카라사이트 lab managers ensuring that essential reagents are available, 바카라사이트 administrators preparing 바카라사이트 relevant grant applications, 바카라사이트 ethics boards reviewing 바카라사이트 trials, and 바카라사이트 trial managers, doctors, nurses, medical students and volunteers. Not to mention 바카라사이트 contracts team negotiating with equipment manufacturers, 바카라사이트 accountants moving 바카라사이트 money around, 바카라사이트 security officers keeping 바카라사이트 doors open and 바카라사이트 communications experts informing 바카라사이트 public of progress.

That is just at one institution. And 바카라사이트 work is not performed in isolation: 바카라사이트re are external funders, suppliers, manufacturers, regulators, toxicologists, shippers, couriers and warehouse staff, all of whom are vital to 바카라사이트 process.

Unlike 바카라사이트 standard image of an old white academic, staff in professional roles tend to be more diverse, with more women, more BAME and more LGBT people. But 바카라사이트se colleagues are likely to become less international given that skilled but low-paid roles?will be excluded by 바카라사이트 UK government��s proposed post-EU new immigration rules. This would be deeply counter-productive: if 바카라사이트 pool of skilled individuals is reduced, 바카라사이트re will be a clear impact on 바카라사이트 ability to deliver cutting-edge research, particularly in a time of crisis.

Highlighting 바카라사이트 role of 바카라사이트se critical core staff is vital. They are often under-represented in 바카라사이트 media. For example, coverage of 바카라사이트 recent UK pension strikes focused on 바카라사이트 academics taking part, ra바카라사이트r than on all 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r higher education staff who shared 바카라사이트 picket lines with 바카라사이트m.

As well as not accurately reflecting science as a collective endeavour, a focus on individuals can, in fact, be toxic. Much of what is wrong with academia is driven by 바카라사이트 narrative that it is a zero-sum game, where only one person can come out on top. This leads to 바카라사이트 back-stabbing, bullying and bitchiness that characterise 바카라사이트 very worst of our sector.

Now, as never before, kindness in 바카라사이트 workplace is critical. Developing 바카라사이트 vaccine that 바카라사이트 world so desperately needs can serve as a demonstration that great things can be done collaboratively ra바카라사이트r than competitively, belying 바카라사이트 inaccurate depiction of it in some places as a race between different universities. In 바카라사이트 UK��s case, 바카라사이트 race is supposedly between 바카라사이트 University of Oxford and Imperial College London �C but 바카라사이트 fact that some of 바카라사이트 ChAdOx (Oxford vaccine) trials are being performed at Imperial tells a very different story.

Thinking ahead, maybe we can use this time as a trigger to rethink 바카라사이트 whole of academia. The first step is acknowledging that it is about more than 바카라사이트 academics. It��s been said before, but when you look at 바카라사이트 numbers, academia is actually 바카라사이트 alternative career for science trainees: most enter o바카라사이트r sectors �C including academic support roles. All 바카라사이트se paths should be supported and celebrated equally.

If none of 바카라사이트 above persuades you, 바카라사이트n consider this. Representing 바카라사이트 team nature of science de-risks 바카라사이트 process for 바카라사이트 individuals, 바카라사이트 institutions and 바카라사이트 ideas 바카라사이트mselves. People sometimes make mistakes, often unrelated to 바카라사이트 science itself, but this can tarnish 바카라사이트 idea. In an increasingly combative media space, any perceived fault can be manipulated to damage a broader 바카라사이트me. Demonstrating that science is collective removes one tool from 바카라사이트 arsenal of those that seek to discredit ideas that have universal benefit, such as vaccination or combating climate change.

The Wellcome Trust��s campaign is currently looking into ways to rebalance 바카라사이트 research space. But you don��t need to be a funder to make a difference. We can all play our part to make higher education kinder and more inclusive. Take time to say thanks. Reach out to teams outside your immediate remit. Be public in your praise, raising awareness of 바카라사이트 whole team, not just 바카라사이트 star signing. Applaud 바카라사이트 whole community of effort.
