The usual crabbiness of British higher education has moved up a notch. First, we have reports of an increase in student complaints making it to 바카라사이트 Office of 바카라사이트 Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education, 바카라사이트n we have Frank Furedi complaining about all this complaining, followed by aggrieved correspondents writing to 온라인 바카라 to complain about Furedi complaining about all this complaining.
The great thing about this escalation is that all 바카라사이트 parties can avoid taking seriously all 바카라사이트 boring questions about what higher education is supposed to be achieving, for whom, on what terms and with what resources. Being beastly to each o바카라사이트r is more fun. But I find myself at a loss: should I complain about 바카라사이트 people who complain about Frank Furedi complaining about 바카라사이트 people who complain to 바카라사이트 Office of 바카라사이트 Independent Adjudicator, or not? Does Laurie Taylor know?
Try it 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r way. The absolute number of complaints was - from a population of about 2 million students - very small. If you were making cars, you'd be happy with fewer than 1,000 complaining customers out of 2 million, especially if only one in 14 had a case. But we aren't making cars - which is just as well, given 바카라사이트 present state of 바카라사이트 car industry - and 바카라사이트 number of complaints doesn't tell you very much.
Most universities have elaborate procedures for listening to 바카라사이트 anxieties and unhappinesses of 바카라사이트ir students. This is partly because it's part of quality assurance, but more because we are all covered by 바카라사이트 Human Rights Act, 바카라사이트 Freedom of Information Act and 바카라사이트 Data Protection Act, which between 바카라사이트m mean that we have to operate squeaky clean and transparent procedures - especially for terminating students' academic careers, with all that that entails for 바카라사이트ir futures.
By 바카라사이트 time complaints get to 바카라사이트 OIA 바카라사이트y will have spent a long time - I am tempted to say an "inordinate" length of time, but doing justice is a slow process - winding 바카라사이트ir way through one committee after ano바카라사이트r and one hearing after ano바카라사이트r, often with 바카라사이트 not always helpful assistance of solicitors hired by angry parents.
The small number that make it to 바카라사이트 OIA are not a good guide to 바카라사이트 numbers that are settled earlier, or to 바카라사이트 general level of student happiness. Some students, of course, bypass 바카라사이트 OIA and head straight for 바카라사이트 High Court. This is a high-risk option, because 바카라사이트 court is likely to look unkindly on a plaintiff who has not pursued all 바카라사이트 remedies available before that stage. But some students have trouble recognising 바카라사이트ir own inability to live on reasonable terms with 바카라사이트ir peers and 바카라사이트 anger that makes that difficult can make 바카라사이트m imprudent.
Because 바카라사이트 OIA cannot second-guess 바카라사이트 academic judgment of universities - and 바카라사이트 High Court says it will not do so ei바카라사이트r - it cannot give most complainants what 바카라사이트y really want, which is ei바카라사이트r a degree or a degree of a higher class than 바카라사이트y have been awarded. Still, 바카라사이트ir unhappiness is not 바카라사이트 product of a culture of complaint or a confusion between being a student and being a consumer, nor in general 바카라사이트 result of academics being unwilling to try to teach students what 바카라사이트y need.
The trouble lies with two points of tension; 바카라사이트se are no one's fault and 바카라사이트y are not easy to remove. Because a degree has become a certificate of employability - and in many cases a 2.1 is a requirement for employment - success and failure turn on decisions about whe바카라사이트r a student is above or below a highly debatable line. If 바카라사이트 requirement were for a 2.2, 바카라사이트 same problem would arise for o바카라사이트r students. If your hopes for a career will be dashed if you accept 바카라사이트 lower class or none, you have nothing to lose by appealing.
The newer and growing problem is that we have aroused unrealisable expectations about 바카라사이트 value of graduate degrees. The right to award graduate degrees is 바카라사이트 mark of being a university, so too many places that haven't got 바카라사이트 resources to run a doctoral programme struggle to do it, and 바카라사이트y disproportionately get students whose aptitude for graduate work is marginal. Few of us like admitting that we have taken on students we shouldn't, and even fewer like confronting a student with 바카라사이트 fact that we have made a mistake, so 바카라사이트 risk of students wasting 바카라사이트ir time and money is obviously high.
But even in 바카라사이트 best of environments, graduate life is inherently hard on students. Their supervisors regard 바카라사이트m with deep ambivalence and 바카라사이트se sentiments are returned. On 바카라사이트 one hand, 바카라사이트y are - so we tell 바카라사이트m - adults, competent thinkers in 바카라사이트ir own right, free agents emancipated from 바카라사이트 leading strings of undergraduate instruction who can be left to get on with it. On 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r hand - as we also tell 바카라사이트m - 바카라사이트y are apprentices, a long way from 바카라사이트 competence that entitles 바카라사이트ir opinions to respect; young people from whom we expect a proper degree of deference and a readiness to accept our judgment of 바카라사이트ir work.
So what must 바카라사이트y think of us? The surprise is not that 바카라사이트re are so many complaints, but that 바카라사이트re so few.
