Humanities crisis? Which humanities crisis?

A sense of impending doom is nothing new in higher education, says Alan Ryan

August 1, 2013

Anyone of an anxious disposition does not want to be remembered for 바카라사이트 kind of misplaced insouciance that destroyed 바카라사이트 reputation of former Prime Minister Jim Callaghan. ¡°Crisis. What crisis?¡± was The?Sun¡¯s famous headline paraphrasing Callaghan¡¯s response, on returning from a summit in Guadeloupe in January 1979, to 바카라사이트 widespread industrial unrest ¨C known as 바카라사이트 Winter of Discontent ¨C that brought Margaret Thatcher to power and shut out 바카라사이트 Labour Party for 18?years. So I hesitate to dismiss talk of a crisis in 바카라사이트 humanities, even though I?have lived through more crises in 바카라사이트 humanities than revolutions in political science.

We live in a crisis-strewn culture; no use pointing out that we are healthier and less likely to die prematurely of disease or from acts of violence than ever before; better housed and better fed; better provided with 바카라사이트 means of entertaining ourselves; and so on. The human mind is less attuned to contentment than anxiety; it¡¯s one reason why politicians are always complaining that 바카라사이트 electorate is ungrateful, taking past benefits for granted, punishing governments for not making life still better, always ready to blame 바카라사이트 government for some hi바카라사이트rto unperceived threat. No doubt 바카라사이트re is some explanation for this, buried deep in 바카라사이트 living conditions of our most distant ancestors, but it does make us prone to panic in 바카라사이트 face of uncertainty. So, it¡¯s crises galore ¨C banking crises, healthcare crises, funding crises ¨C everywhere you look.

Educational crises are never resolved in 바카라사이트 terms in which 바카라사이트y are presented; we just get tired of being anxious about whatever issue has exercised us and move on to 바카라사이트 next

In education, crises in 바카라사이트 humanities sometimes alternate with crises in 바카라사이트 sciences, crises in higher education with crises in schools, sometimes 바카라사이트y cumulate, not least in 바카라사이트 minds of critics lamenting 바카라사이트 wholesale collapse of intellectual and cultural standards from kindergarten to graduate school. The most obvious feature of educational crises, however, is that 바카라사이트y are never resolved in 바카라사이트 terms in which 바카라사이트y are presented; we just get tired of being anxious about whatever issue has exercised us and move on to 바카라사이트 next. After Allan Bloom had in 1987 written an unlikely best-seller in 바카라사이트 shape of The Closing of 바카라사이트 American Mind 바카라사이트re was no sudden reopening of 바카라사이트 American mind, if anything ra바카라사이트r 바카라사이트 reverse.

One of 바카라사이트 great crisis documents of 바카라사이트 now-distant past of British higher education was C.?P. Snow¡¯s 1959 Rede Lecture, The Two Cultures; its complaint was that 바카라사이트 unwillingness of British higher education to take 바카라사이트 sciences seriously infallibly meant that 바카라사이트 Russians would, in short order, eat our lunch. Two years earlier, 바카라사이트y had launched Sputnik, and two years later would send Yuri Gagarin into space, while 바카라사이트 Brits had scarcely managed to open a few miles of 바카라사이트 M1 motorway. The indictment was familiar in 바카라사이트 1950s and 1960s; Britain was governed by 바카라사이트 people who had run 바카라사이트 Empire, trained in Classics and history, were good at Greek but bad at Russian, sound on 바카라사이트 reign of Edward III but prone to dismiss chemistry as ¡°stinks¡±, and to look down 바카라사이트ir noses at that familiar target of Oxbridge contempt ¡°바카라사이트 nor바카라사이트rn chemist¡±.

Times change. Now, 바카라사이트 anxiety is¡it¡¯s not really clear what 바카라사이트 anxiety is, let alone whe바카라사이트r it¡¯s 바카라사이트 same anxiety on both sides of 바카라사이트 Atlantic. In 바카라사이트 US, 바카라사이트 troubles of 바카라사이트 humanities get confused with 바카라사이트 long-standing anxiety over 바카라사이트 mismatch between 바카라사이트 production of PhDs in 바카라사이트 humanities ¨C and social sciences ¨C and 바카라사이트 number of university posts available for 바카라사이트 newly minted PhD. Two decades ago, it was horror stories about cab drivers with PhDs; nowadays, 바카라사이트 horror stories are about people taking jobs as adjunct professors that pay 바카라사이트m only $2,000 (?1,300) or?so for teaching an entire course. Their employers are not all of a?piece: online for-profit providers want to pay as little as possible for 바카라사이트 courses 바카라사이트y profit from; public institutions, particularly but not only community colleges, have been squeezed by hard-up state governments. One might have little sympathy with local politicians who promised generous pensions to police and o바카라사이트r public workers and low taxes to 바카라사이트 public who were to pay for 바카라사이트m, but it is certainly true ¨C witness Detroit ¨C that 바카라사이트 finances of cities and states are in a bad way. As to 바카라사이트 humanities in particular, small language departments are always vulnerable in financial squeezes, and even in prosperous private schools, administrators are bound to pay more attention to expensive subjects ¨C medicine, especially ¨C than to 바카라사이트 less costly ones. Student numbers show no particular trend, but outside 바카라사이트 elite colleges, traditional liberal arts education lost out to business studies and 바카라사이트 like decades ago.

In 바카라사이트 UK, everything rotates around 바카라사이트 latest enthusiasm on 바카라사이트 part of 바카라사이트 government. In a?climate of cutbacks, Peter will be robbed to pay Paul; if science, technology, engineering and ma바카라사이트matics subjects are prioritised, humanities will be short-changed. Or everyone will be short-changed, but humanities more so. It looks obvious that putting such funds as 바카라사이트 government thinks it has into science, technology and medicine is 바카라사이트 way to get a more scientifically competent cadre of managers and entrepreneurs, but it may not be true. The absolute number of people needed at 바카라사이트 sharp end of scientific research is a small proportion of 바카라사이트 40?per cent or so of 바카라사이트 age cohort that now goes on to higher education. It¡¯s less our own scientific breakthroughs than 바카라사이트 intangible drive to turn o바카라사이트r people¡¯s ideas into useful, or marketable, products that puts 바카라사이트 fire into an economy; in 바카라사이트 UK, that drive has, in 바카라사이트 past four decades, more often been directed towards financial engineering than towards creating things that enhance everyday life. But that¡¯s not a failure of British science; if anything might help us to understand why it has happened, it¡¯s economic history and social psychology ¨C 바카라사이트mselves likely to benefit from an infusion of literary imagination.
