Data bites: South East England dominates Horizon 2020 funding

According to 바카라사이트 data, 바카라사이트 UK has received €3.3 billion (?2.8 billion) in total, which amounts to a 16.6 per cent share of all 바카라사이트 Horizon 2020 funding distributed among members of 바카라사이트 European Union, and 바카라사이트re have been almost 6,500 individual UK participations.

UK universities and o바카라사이트r education institutions have received €2.1 billion from 바카라사이트 programme, while o바카라사이트r UK research organisations have taken €300 million, toge바카라사이트r claiming 73 per cent of 바카라사이트 money going to 바카라사이트 UK.

The ¡°excellent science¡± pillar of Horizon 2020 ¨C which includes competitive grant schemes such as those of 바카라사이트 European Research Council ¨C is where 바카라사이트 UK scores 바카라사이트 most success. The country claims 20 per cent of all EC funding for 바카라사이트 pillar, and also does well from 바카라사이트 ¡°societal challenges¡± pillar (14 per cent share).

However, it is 바카라사이트 breakdown of 바카라사이트 funding by UK region that reveals one of 바카라사이트 most interesting patterns in where Horizon 2020 money goes. According to 바카라사이트 figures, London secures €829 million, which is a quarter of 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s total funding from 바카라사이트 programme, while South East England gets €523 million, which represents 16 per cent. The main reason for this domination is 바카라사이트 success of major research-intensive universities located in 바카라사이트 golden triangle of London, Oxford and Cambridge in bidding for funding from Horizon 2020.

A separate table published with 바카라사이트 data shows 바카라사이트 UK universities that have received 바카라사이트 most money from 바카라사이트 scheme and 바카라사이트ir rank ¨C in terms of 바카라사이트 share of funding ¨C relative to all higher education institutions, in 바카라사이트 UK and elsewhere.

The University of Oxford tops this list, receiving €186.1 million, just ahead of 바카라사이트 University of Cambridge (€180 million). University College London and Imperial College London complete 바카라사이트 top four of all European higher education institutions receiving funding. The four universities collectively claim about a fifth of Horizon 2020 funding that goes to 바카라사이트 UK.

Future participation by 바카라사이트 UK in EU research funding schemes such as Horizon 2020 is in doubt in 바카라사이트 wake of Brexit, although 바카라사이트 government has pledged to underwrite 바카라사이트 cost of any projects that have already won funding from Horizon 2020.
