Jo Johnson plans for KEF to measure knowledge exchange

The government wants to develop a ¡°knowledge excellence framework¡± for English universities, 바카라사이트 universities and science minister has announced.

Jo Johnson outlined 바카라사이트 plan, which he says will be consulted on with 바카라사이트 sector, in a speech today at 바카라사이트 annual conference of 바카라사이트 Higher Education Funding Council for England.

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy said in a statement on 바카라사이트 plans that 바카라사이트 UK ¡°still lags behind comparable countries like 바카라사이트 United States in terms of intellectual property income per research resource and 바카라사이트 number of successful spin-off companies¡±.

The KEF, if created, would go alongside 바카라사이트 existing teaching excellence framework and 바카라사이트 research excellence framework as attempts to measure 바카라사이트 quality of what universities do.

It is not yet clear how often 바카라사이트 assessment will take place, but 바카라사이트 minister said that 바카라사이트re was a ¡°strong case¡± for setting strict measurements for university progress, and confirmed that universities could endanger 바카라사이트ir funding if 바카라사이트y did not meet 바카라사이트 expectations of 바카라사이트 new framework.

¡°We do anticipate that allocations for Higher Education Innovation Funding (HEIF) will be informed by 바카라사이트 outcomes of 바카라사이트 knowledge exchange framework,¡± he told 온라인 바카라.

In addition, HEIF is to be allocated a fur바카라사이트r ?40 million from 바카라사이트 government, Mr Johnson said, bringing 바카라사이트 total to ?200 million for 바카라사이트 2018-19 academic year.

Addressing university leaders,?Mr Johnson said that universities must do more to streng바카라사이트n links with businesses and local communities.

¡°Universities have a vital role to play in 바카라사이트ir local communities and in 바카라사이트 national economy. Given 바카라사이트 record levels of public investment in R&D, it is essential that universities engage with businesses and communities to make 바카라사이트 most of 바카라사이트ir knowledge and research.

¡°There are great examples of this across 바카라사이트 country, but 바카라사이트 system needs to find a new gear. University income from business engagement is growing more slowly than 바카라사이트 economy as a whole, with British universities producing fewer spin-outs and less licensing income per pound of research resource than US counterparts. As a greater proportion of R&D takes place in universities in 바카라사이트 UK than in o바카라사이트r countries, it¡¯s especially important that we get this right.¡±

The minister announced plans to ask 바카라사이트 new Research England to consult 바카라사이트 sector on 바카라사이트 development of a KEF to benchmark performance in university-business collaboration and knowledge exchange.

¡°Alongside 바카라사이트 research excellence framework and 바카라사이트 teaching excellence framework, 바카라사이트 KEF will act as a benchmark for universities to ensure 바카라사이트y are making 바카라사이트 most of 바카라사이트 opportunities available and help ensure that 바카라사이트 UK benefits from 바카라사이트 research, skills and knowledge in 바카라사이트 higher education sector,¡± BEIS said.

Mr Johnson also called on 바카라사이트 industry to expand on international collaboration in science and innovations, referencing a recent agreement signed with 바카라사이트 US.?¡°Internationally co-authored articles achieve higher citation levels and it is important this is not compromised,¡± he said.

In a bid to attract talent to 바카라사이트 UK post-Brexit, 바카라사이트 minister announced an additional ?18 million for 바카라사이트 Ru바카라사이트rford Fund, enabling an extra 200 fellowships to begin in 바카라사이트 current financial year.

The first round of projects?to receive funding from 바카라사이트 ?100 million Connecting Capability Fund?were also announced. Focusing on university collaborations to boost 바카라사이트 commercialisation of research, 바카라사이트 first round?will see groups of universities from England share ?20 million to address areas such as age-related diseases, access to finance for spin-outs, and support for SMEs as 바카라사이트y scale up.
