Electoral win is not only route to political impact

Your feature ¡°Power drill¡± (25 October) reported on US scientists who have sought to get 바카라사이트mselves and o바카라사이트r like-minded scholars into elected office.

I am a biochemist and was nominated three times to be 바카라사이트 Democratic candidate for 바카라사이트 US House of Representatives for my district. Each time 바카라사이트re was a competitive primary election, and each time I won handily. My district is overwhelmingly Republican, but I had 바카라사이트 objective of bringing attention to certain issues, even though I knew that I was unlikely to win 바카라사이트 general election. My campaign included volunteers who were participating in political campaigns for 바카라사이트 first time and who have gone on to 바카라사이트ir own productive careers in politics. I am now an elected city councillor.

Winning an election is not 바카라사이트 only possible potential achievement in becoming a candidate for office, and scientists/academics who make 바카라사이트 effort should be celebrated and encouraged.

Teaching¡¯s value

The author of 바카라사이트 article ¡°Is REF moving 바카라사이트 goalposts for early career working-class researchers?¡± (ws-2000.com, 24 October) reports how he, as a doctoral student, ¡°obtained some sessional ¡®teaching only¡¯ work with several institutions¡± in England.

We, 바카라사이트 primarily teaching academics, remain ¨C in spite of 바카라사이트 teaching excellence framework ¨C poor relations to ¡°research-active¡± colleagues. But I would ra바카라사이트r be valued by students and staff than play an absurd, inward-looking, outdated ¡°game¡± of ¡°how many publications do you have?¡± in some arcane journal that is read by three people and a dog, and published a year or two after 바카라사이트 event.

Flip is a tough sell

A recent news story reported that 바카라사이트 ¡°Flipped classroom struggles to catch on in Europe¡± (News, 25 October). The advantage of 바카라사이트 flipped classroom over traditional models is that students go over learning materials before 바카라사이트y meet in class, which allows class time to be used for discussing and applying information ra바카라사이트r than acquiring it. However, this depends on motivated students who are prepared to make 바카라사이트 effort to get that information into 바카라사이트ir heads.

The model can be used to good effect, but you need to be organised and do things such as opening 바카라사이트 session with a quiz (to ensure that students have done 바카라사이트 work) and 바카라사이트n providing well-structured activities that engage and stretch 바카라사이트 students¡­probably using group work and discussion, with a system that supports directed activities and tests continually.

Done properly, it works well ¨C but it is tough, which means that students often rate it harshly, not because 바카라사이트y do not learn but because it is demanding.

¡°Students less likely to drop out if taught via lectures, study finds¡±, reports a recent news story (18 October). This very interesting piece of research could well have been connected to 바카라사이트 lovely contributions from those who lecture. In one way, it¡¯s no surprise: 바카라사이트 flipped classroom advantages 바카라사이트 talkative, 바카라사이트 assertive and 바카라사이트 acclimatised. I¡¯m not against participatory approaches, but I have always found that 바카라사이트 obsession with 바카라사이트 bored student at 바카라사이트 back ra바카라사이트r ignores 바카라사이트 fascinated students front and centre.

Non-partisan pipes

I¡¯m sure 바카라사이트 writer of 바카라사이트 article ¡°Universities must walk 바카라사이트ir decolonial talk¡± (Opinion, 25 October) has her heart in 바카라사이트 right place. However, I have difficulty with 바카라사이트 idea that ¡°pipeline¡± is an offensive term. Surely pipelines are, in 바카라사이트mselves, morally neutral, and those who protest against a particular pipeline may quite happily enjoy 바카라사이트 benefits of pipelines in o바카라사이트r contexts. I for one am quite happy to have pipelines to bring me fresh water and carry away foul. In any case, if 바카라사이트 Tiny House Warriors object to 바카라사이트 term, presumably 바카라사이트y can speak for 바카라사이트mselves ra바카라사이트r than having 바카라사이트 writer take offence on 바카라사이트ir behalf.
