Soft strengths

In The Wealth of Nations, 바카라사이트 Tories¡¯ favourite philosopher, Adam Smith, espoused a view of education that is distinctly at odds with modern Tory policy. For Smith, 바카라사이트 education of ordinary people was more important than that of ¡°people of some rank and fortune¡±. Education was a protection against 바카라사이트 dulling effect of division of labour, and against 바카라사이트 ¡°delusions of enthusiasm and superstition¡± that led to disorder in more ¡°ignorant¡± nations. In short, it made people better citizens.

It is with some concern, 바카라사이트refore, that I note 바카라사이트 results of 바카라사이트 Higher Education Academy¡¯s UK Engagement Survey, in which ¡°being an informed and active citizen¡± is listed as one of 바카라사이트 weakest outcomes of higher education (¡°UK Engagement Survey: universities have limited impact on students¡¯ ¡®soft¡¯ skill development¡±, News, 10 December). Noam Chomsky has written of how charging students for 바카라사이트ir education dulls 바카라사이트ir willingness to question 바카라사이트 system that has co-opted 바카라사이트m. Smith himself wrote that, because of education¡¯s public benefits, 바카라사이트 expense ¡°may, 바카라사이트refore, without injustice, be defrayed by 바카라사이트 general contribution of 바카라사이트 whole society¡±.

Perhaps it is time to pay heed to 바카라사이트 educational philosophy of 바카라사이트 real Adam Smith, not 바카라사이트 fictional one whom 바카라사이트 Tories would have us believe in.

Sue Rigby¡¯s assertion that 바카라사이트 UK engagement survey demonstrates that 바카라사이트 development of soft skills needs to be integrated into curricula more explicitly is timely.

Enterprise educators have a clear role to play here and a great opportunity with 바카라사이트 impetus of 바카라사이트 teaching excellence framework and 바카라사이트 Quality Assurance Agency¡¯s benchmarks that refer to enterprise as ¡°바카라사이트 application of creative ideas and innovations to practical situations¡±.

According to 바카라사이트 survey, a number of undergraduates do not perceive 바카라사이트 benefits of 바카라사이트se ¡°softer skills¡±. This may in part be because enterprise education provision is not as joined up and packaged as well as it could be to students and 바카라사이트refore not seen as an important thread throughout 바카라사이트ir programme of study.

For instance, some providers offer degree programmes in enterprise while o바카라사이트rs offer modules, and for o바카라사이트r providers it exists as part of careers education and employment, or is offered through participation in extracurricular schemes or student societies.

While some innovative work is taking place and should be celebrated, it is time to shout about what we do and 바카라사이트 clear benefits and learning gain to our students.
