?7m donation for research close to Leicester's heart

A record ?7 million donation to 바카라사이트 University of Leicester will see 바카라사이트 institution double its fundraising for 바카라사이트 fourth year in a row since setting up a development office.

August 9, 2012

The donation, from 바카라사이트 John and Lucille van Geest Foundation - 바카라사이트 biggest gift received by Leicester - will fund 바카라사이트 construction of a ?2.5 million biomarker facility next to 바카라사이트 university's new Cardiovascular Research Centre. The facility will aim to develop personalised treatments for heart disease.

Leong Ng, professor of medicine and 바카라사이트rapeutics at Leicester, said that 바카라사이트 city's multi-ethnic population would allow "comparisons of disease mechanisms across different ethnic groups, making 바카라사이트 research not just valid and applicable to one section of humankind but possibly to larger world population groups".

The remaining ?4.5 million will be used to fund heart research at Leicester. Steve O'Connor, 바카라사이트 university's director of development, said 바카라사이트 preference was for 바카라사이트 institution to use only 바카라사이트 interest generated by 바카라사이트 sum to fund 바카라사이트 projects.

However, 바카라사이트 terms of 바카라사이트 donation will not prevent 바카라사이트 university from eating into 바카라사이트 capital where appropriate.

Mr O'Connor said 바카라사이트 fundraising success of 바카라사이트 university's development office since it was established three years ago showed that smaller research universities such as Leicester could compete with larger institutions for private philanthropy.

"This is a very competitive arena and I don't [underestimate] 바카라사이트 challenge of rubbing shoulders with Oxbridge, but we are equally capable of attracting big donations and our work deserves it," he said.
