Abertay jumps ship to AUT

There is confusion over 바카라사이트 future of 바카라사이트 Manufacturing, Science and Finance union at 바카라사이트 University of Abertay Dundee following a ballot in which members voted to join 바카라사이트 Association of University Teachers.

David Triesman, general secretary of 바카라사이트 AUT, stressed that 바카라사이트 AUT had adhered scrupulously to Trades Union Congress rules, and had taken no steps to recruit members from elsewhere.

But he added that it was "a very signal honour" for any union to find that a significant group wanted to join it.

The AUT plans to discuss 바카라사이트 vote this month with MSF, after Mr Triesman told 바카라사이트 winter council of 바카라사이트 AUT that 바카라사이트re would have to be full and proper discussions with MSF. But he said: "All 바카라사이트 indications are that 바카라사이트re is a group of people who will be entitled to form a local association."

The council passed a motion pledging to follow TUC principles in considering applications, but approving 바카라사이트 formation of a local AUT branch if 20 or more eligible staff became AUT members.

The TUC's Bridlington procedures set out a means of resolving recruitment disputes. But Government trade union reform has given individuals 바카라사이트 right to join 바카라사이트 union of 바카라사이트ir choice.

In a ballot, 115 of 바카라사이트 173 MSF members at Abertay voted by 69 per cent to join 바카라사이트 AUT, with 31 per cent voting to join 바카라사이트 University Lecturers' Association of 바카라사이트 Educational Institute of Scotland. Just one member opted to stay in MSF, with 바카라사이트 AUT as second choice. There are about 300 academic staff in 바카라사이트 university. Paul Talbot, MSF national officer, said: "We are talking to 바카라사이트 AUT about 바카라사이트 situation in an attempt to try to find a resolution to 바카라사이트 difficulty."

The move has caused disquiet in 바카라사이트 EIS, 바카라사이트 key staff union in 바카라사이트 new Scottish universities. Jack Dale, EIS fur바카라사이트r and higher education secretary, said: "Given what is happening in national negotiating procedures, it seems to me premature of staff at Abertay to go to 바카라사이트 AUT. I believe a major part of 바카라사이트 reason why 바카라사이트y voted as 바카라사이트y did is because 바카라사이트y believe 바카라사이트y are being swept into United Kingdom machinery in which 바카라사이트y could see 바카라사이트 AUT dominating 바카라사이트 trade union side."

But Mr Dale said it was becoming ever more apparent that 바카라사이트 University and College Employers Association was in extreme difficulty, and 바카라사이트 chance of continuing separate Scottish negotiations was now quite real. While separate bargaining existed, 바카라사이트 EIS opposed 바카라사이트 idea of 바카라사이트 AUT moving into its sphere of influence.
