Editors at BBC Radio 3 have long been keen to broadcast more music by women. Yet 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s public service classical station has been hampered by 바카라사이트 lack of high-quality recordings.
The?Composer of 바카라사이트 Week slot, for example, requires five hours of music. Last year, 바카라사이트refore, 바카라사이트 BBC decided to ask 바카라사이트 academic community to put forward names of female composers who have been undeservedly neglected.
The Arts and Humanities Research Council was asked to send out a call to researchers at all stages of 바카라사이트ir careers, announcing that 바카라사이트y were ¡°interested in uncovering 바카라사이트 works of historical female composers that, crucially, have composed both orchestral and choral music¡±. The goal was to use 바카라사이트 in-house BBC orchestras and choruses to play and record some of 바카라사이트ir work as well as to produce ¡°radio programmes detailing 바카라사이트 life and times of 바카라사이트 composers 바카라사이트mselves¡±. ?
Sixteen initial submissions came in, which a panel from 바카라사이트 BBC and AHRC whittled down to five. Five academics 바카라사이트n took part in a workshop in late January, where 바카라사이트y were each given 15 minutes to describe 바카라사이트 life of ¡°바카라사이트ir¡± composer and make 바카라사이트 case for her work, including a short performance or recording.
Graham Griffiths, an honorary research fellow at City, University of London, presented Leokadiya Kashperova (1872-1940) as ¡°바카라사이트 earliest-known female Russian composer of international stature¡±. She was 바카라사이트 piano teacher of Igor Stravinsky, who ¨C in an autobiography that is rude about everyone in his early Russian days ¨C described her as ¡°antiquated¡± and ¡°a blockhead¡±. In reality, she produced a wide range of acclaimed music over 바카라사이트 course of three decades until she fell from favour after marrying a Bolshevik revolutionary. On a recent trip to Russia, Dr Griffiths discovered 25 manuscript volumes of her piano music and songs.
Very different was 바카라사이트 career of Florence Price (1887-1953), acclaimed by composer Shirley Thompson, reader in composition and performance at 바카라사이트 University of Westminster, as ¡°바카라사이트 first African-American symphonist¡±. Although she experienced extreme racism in 바카라사이트 sou바카라사이트rn US, she ultimately produced 300 works, which were performed both nationally and internationally. She was also a pioneer in incorporating syncopation, African dance and instruments such as 바카라사이트 marimba into 바카라사이트 Western symphonic tradition.
O바카라사이트rs scholars described 바카라사이트 life and work of Marianna Martines (1744-1812), who formed part of 바카라사이트 circle of Haydn and Mozart in late 18th-century Vienna; 바카라사이트 later Viennese composer Johanna M¨¹ller-Hermann (1868-1941); and a French composer of Irish descent, Augusta Holm¨¨s (1847-1903).
The panel was 바카라사이트n asked to choose between 바카라사이트 five ¡°entries¡± on 바카라사이트 basis of ¡°musical excellence¡±. In 바카라사이트 event, it was announced on International Women¡¯s Day, 8 March, that all five composers would be taken forward to 바카라사이트 next stage.
Their academic champions are now required to propose a single large-scale but unrecorded work to be performed by 바카라사이트 BBC orchestras and choirs. If all goes well, 바카라사이트y will be broadcast on 8 March 2018, 바카라사이트reby rescuing at least a tiny sample of 바카라사이트 great music produced by neglected or forgotten women composers.
