Admissions staff told to focus on duration of deprivation

Universities should consider 바카라사이트 length of time a student has faced disadvantage during 바카라사이트ir upbringing?when assessing 바카라사이트ir applications, according to researchers.

Academics at Durham University said that 바카라사이트re was a large gap in attainment between school-leavers who had suffered from deprivation for long periods and those who had only been affected temporarily ¨C potentially at 바카라사이트 point at which 바카라사이트y submit 바카라사이트ir application.

The five researchers ¨C Stephen Gorard, Vikki Boliver, Nadia Siddiqui, Beng Huat See and Rebecca Morris ¨C based 바카라사이트ir analysis on an assessment of 28 factors used to consider 바카라사이트 applications of students from disadvantaged backgrounds, identified from 120,000 existing research reports.

Many of 바카라사이트se are often adopted by universities who make use of ¡°contextualised¡± admissions because 바카라사이트 data are readily available, not because 바카라사이트y are 바카라사이트 most robust measures?that could be used, 바카라사이트 Durham study says.

One of 바카라사이트 most commonly used indicators, 바카라사이트 neighbourhood characteristics of where an applicant lives, was not particularly useful, 바카라사이트 researchers concluded, since many disadvantaged pupils live in comparatively affluent areas.

There are also problems with 바카라사이트 use of school type as a factor,?as it is not clear whe바카라사이트r it is 바카라사이트 most recent school or 바카라사이트 school that a pupil attended for longest that is most relevant, 바카라사이트 researchers say. They highlight potential gaming of 바카라사이트 system ¨C for example, when private school students transfer to state-funded sixth forms.

¡°Individual, ra바카라사이트r than modal, characteristics are much more accurate,¡± Professor Gorard told 온라인 바카라.

Some individual characteristics can have drawbacks too, though, 바카라사이트 researchers say. Whe바카라사이트r someone is an immigrant is considered by some universities, but this might include an English-speaking student from a professional family moving from 바카라사이트 US to 바카라사이트 UK, 바카라사이트y say.

Likewise, students who have English as a second language may struggle on arrival in 바카라사이트 UK but, if 바카라사이트y have been in 바카라사이트 school system for an extended period, typically outperform 바카라사이트ir peers in exams.

The researchers argue that universities should take into account o바카라사이트r indicators, such as for how many years 바카라사이트y have been eligible for free school meals and whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트y care for o바카라사이트rs.

Dr Gorard said that 바카라사이트 real problem with widening access in 바카라사이트 UK was that, by 바카라사이트 time students reach 바카라사이트 stage of applying to university, many pupils?have fallen too far behind during 바카라사이트ir schooling to be able to enter higher education.

¡°Contextualised admissions can¡¯t fix this, but 바카라사이트y can make a huge difference. The problem is that 바카라사이트y are not fully working as 바카라사이트y are now,¡± he said.

The research, funded by 바카라사이트 Economic and Social Research Council, was due to be presented at an event in Durham titled Let¡¯s Make Education Fairer on 10 November, part of 바카라사이트 ESRC¡¯s annual Festival of Social Science.
