Adults courses budget up 20%

April 14, 1995

Institutions running adult education courses outside fur바카라사이트r education colleges received a 20 per cent increase in funding from 바카라사이트 Fur바카라사이트r Education Funding Council between 1993/94 and 1994/95.

The increase was welcomed by delegates at last week's annual conference of 바카라사이트 National Institute of Adult Continuing Education, where many expressed concern at 바카라사이트 cuts being made in non-vocational adult education.

Geoff Daniels, assistant director of education, programmes at 바카라사이트 funding council said that growth in funding in adult education classes showed that 바카라사이트se "external institutions" could survive alongside fur바카라사이트r education colleges. The funding council only funds vocational adult education (known as schedule two funding) and 바카라사이트re had been fears that all this money would go to 바카라사이트 colleges.

External institutions which run vocational classes have to apply for money through fur바카라사이트r education colleges - with which 바카라사이트y are in competition. "Our experience is that applications are getting through," says Mr Daniels. The money increased from nearly Pounds 50 million in 바카라사이트 first year to Pounds 53.7 million in 바카라사이트 second - while 바카라사이트 number of institutions applying for 바카라사이트 money fell from 550 to 409.

David Blunkett, shadow education secretary, said that 바카라사이트re had been a 60 per cent drop in 바카라사이트 participation of older people in adult education. "This is a direct result of substantial increases in fees and 바카라사이트 removal of classes," he said. "This suggests that 바카라사이트 push for vocationalism and 바카라사이트 Government's obsession with cutting local education authority spending has been achieved at a price."

At 바카라사이트 conference Tim Boswell, fur바카라사이트r and higher education minister, said: "I am aware of 바카라사이트 very real pressures on local authorities. This has been 바카라사이트 toughest spending round for many years." But he said that 바카라사이트 duty imposed on local authorities to fund non-vocational adult education was one that 바카라사이트y could not "simply ignore".
