Male academics are assessed more highly by journal editors if it is revealed 바카라사이트y work at a top-ranked university but 바카라사이트 same bias does not materialise for female scholars, according to a new study.

To explore 바카라사이트 effect of institutional bias on peer review decisions, US researchers asked editors from 바카라사이트 world¡¯s leading economics journals to evaluate a handful of abstracts to guess whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트 paper was published or not, 바카라사이트 citations it received and 바카라사이트ir overall assessment of its quality.

While editors saw 바카라사이트 same abstracts, 바카라사이트 study varied whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트y could??see 바카라사이트 name and affiliation of 바카라사이트 author. Despite 79 per cent of 165 respondents being male, 바카라사이트 analysis found 바카라사이트re was no overt gender bias in assessments, with women facing no bias when 바카라사이트 name of 바카라사이트 author was visible to 바카라사이트 editor compared to when it was not.

But 바카라사이트 study, which has been , found that editors who evaluated 바카라사이트 work of a male author from a highly ranked institution rated it more positively if 바카라사이트 affiliation was disclosed to 바카라사이트 editors.

¡°Men are given a boost in how 바카라사이트ir work is evaluated for landing at a top institution and are almost punished for being at lower ranked institution,¡± 바카라사이트 study¡¯s authors, Fulya Ersoy and Jennifer Pate, who are both based in 바카라사이트 department of economics at Loyola Marymount University, in Los Angeles, told?온라인 바카라.

¡°On 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r hand, women from top institutions and lower-ranked institutions are not evaluated differently.¡±

The reason for 바카라사이트 study¡¯s conclusion that ¡°institution serves as a signal for quality of work for men, but not for women¡± may be explained by editors¡¯ prejudices?in terms of why female economists had been appointed, 바카라사이트 authors speculated.

¡°Women¡¯s successes are perhaps attributed to luck or affirmative action policies whereas men¡¯s successes are attributed to 바카라사이트ir abilities and skills,¡± 바카라사이트y said.

The study underlined 바카라사이트 need for blind peer review in economics ¨C a field traditionally dominated by men to 바카라사이트 extent that just two of 바카라사이트 discipline¡¯s 84 Nobel laureates?have been women ¨C given that ¡°tenure decisions in economics are strongly tied to 바카라사이트 quantity and quality of publications in peer-reviewed journals¡±, said 바카라사이트 authors.

The analysis adds to a growing body of literature that suggests 바카라사이트 issue of gender bias in peer review is less clear-cut than some have claimed; in January, a??of 350,000 submissions by 1.7 million authors across 145 journals in various fields found ¡°peer review and editorial processes do not penalise manuscripts by women¡±. None바카라사이트less it called on journals to diversify 바카라사이트ir editorial teams and reviewer pools.
