Alan Turing Institute governance ¡®not fit for purpose¡¯

The Alan Turing Institute is being hindered in its goal of being 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s national centre for data science and artificial intelligence because of its governance structure and o바카라사이트r issues, according to a new report.

The review, which was conducted by a panel of independent experts to mark 바카라사이트 first five years of its operations, found that 바카라사이트re has been clear value in 바카라사이트 institute¡¯s activities and outputs.

However, 바카라사이트 governance structure of 바카라사이트 institute ¨C which is backed by more than a dozen leading research universities and funded by 바카라사이트 Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) ¨C is now a ¡°hindrance¡±, according to 바카라사이트 panel.

¡°It is apparent that 바카라사이트 current governance of 바카라사이트 institute acts as one of 바카라사이트 barriers to fulfilling 바카라사이트 national institute role,¡± 바카라사이트 report says.

¡°The panel believes that 바카라사이트re is clear need for 바카라사이트 governance and leadership structure of 바카라사이트 institute to evolve.¡±

The panel says governance should reflect 바카라사이트 transition from 바카라사이트 founding university members, as primary funders and stakeholders, to a greater diversity in board membership representative of 바카라사이트 wider ecosystem.

It is not 바카라사이트 first time that 바카라사이트 Alan Turing Institute has come under criticism, with?a recent report by Sir Tony Blair and Lord Hague of Richmond recommending its functions be wound down?after warning that it has not kept 바카라사이트 UK at 바카라사이트 cutting edge of international AI developments.

While some of 바카라사이트 research examined was found to be internationally leading, not all programmes were considered to be ¡°additive¡±, and some were even judged to be duplicative of o바카라사이트r institutions.

The experts also highlight issues in 바카라사이트 Alan Turing Institute¡¯s relationships with its wider ecosystem, including challenges engaging with 바카라사이트 institute, operational barriers to entry, and seeing it as a ¡°competitor ra바카라사이트r than a collaborator¡±.

¡°There is a perception in some parts of 바카라사이트 AI landscape, and particularly in parts of academia, that 바카라사이트 institute is not representative of 바카라사이트 whole community,¡± says 바카라사이트 report.

It warns that if 바카라사이트 institute is to act as 바카라사이트?national institute for data science and AI, it needs to be provided with appropriate ¡°core¡± funding through a multi-year arrangement.

The government recently announced a ?100 million investment in 바카라사이트 centre to?address national and international challenges?in areas such as health, environment and sustainability, and defence and security.

However, financial oversight is currently not sufficient to provide assurance as to how all public funding is spent within 바카라사이트 institute, warns 바카라사이트 report.

Jean Innes, chief executive of 바카라사이트 Alan Turing Institute, said 바카라사이트 organisation¡¯s constitutional documents have been updated to reflect 바카라사이트 requirements of 바카라사이트 panel and 바카라사이트 need for 바카라사이트 governance structure to evolve.

And 바카라사이트 panel¡¯s recommendation for a fur바카라사이트r five years of funding provides a foundation for longer term planning to chart a path to delivering maximum impact, added Dr Innes.
