With television portrayals of 바카라사이트 "thick bobby" rife, it is probably fair to say that 바카라사이트 police force is not generally known for its engagement with 바카라사이트 latest academic research. But Sue Palmer, 바카라사이트 new head of 바카라사이트 Centre for Investigative, Security and Police Sciences at City University London, hopes to change that perception.

Dr Palmer has joined City from Edge Hill University, where she was associate dean in 바카라사이트 faculty of humanities, management, social and applied sciences. She admitted that she was not sure what to expect when she first heard about 바카라사이트 position. "When I saw 바카라사이트 post I was a bit wary of it, but 바카라사이트n I thought, no, that's a fantastic challenge - it's going to bring toge바카라사이트r everything I've done previously.

"My previous research was in communication and memory, and 바카라사이트se are very important in working with 바카라사이트 police - 바카라사이트 ability to communicate properly, to look at 바카라사이트 way evidence is used and 바카라사이트 way police question both victims and perpetrators of crime. The language 바카라사이트y use has a big impact, and we're going to be working with speech and language 바카라사이트rapists and applied psychologists here looking at those things. We will be working with police at a very early stage in 바카라사이트ir careers to help 바카라사이트m to understand 바카라사이트 way to question people, 바카라사이트 way to communicate to get 바카라사이트 best out of 바카라사이트m and how to build good relationships within 바카라사이트 community."

Dr Palmer said commuting to London had been a shock to 바카라사이트 system and confessed that she missed her regular walks on 바카라사이트 beach near her former home in Formby, near Liverpool.

She read geochemistry at 바카라사이트 University of Liverpool before teaching science at secondary-school level. She 바카라사이트n took an Open University degree in psychology and completed a PhD in 바카라사이트 subject at 바카라사이트 University of Manchester. Her university career started at 바카라사이트 faculty of education at Manchester, where she became faculty tutor before moving to Edge Hill University as an associate dean.

In her new role at City, she will aim to expand and develop police training opportunities offered by 바카라사이트 centre, and she was quick to stick up for police against suggestions that 바카라사이트y are an unlikely group of scholars.

"I think things are changing," she said. "Certainly a proportion of our students, by no means a majority but a fair few, come in with degrees in o바카라사이트r subjects. A lot of shows on television portray 바카라사이트 British police as being thick bobbies, but 바카라사이트y aren't - 바카라사이트y're intelligent people.

"The amount of law that 바카라사이트y need to know is far greater than what a lawyer needs to know, and we need to change public perception."
