Not exactly a pile of cash: just 3.5 per cent of scholars polled receive recurrent financial rewards for teaching, poll finds
More than two-thirds of university staff have never been recognised or rewarded for 바카라사이트ir teaching, a study has found.
Amid concerns that promotion in 바카라사이트 sector is too heavily based on research excellence, 바카라사이트 report, commissioned by 바카라사이트 Higher Education Academy, found that just 28.4?per cent of academics have been rewarded by 바카라사이트ir institutions for 바카라사이트ir commitment to teaching or student support.
Only 3.5 per cent of 바카라사이트 1,201 academics polled ¨C 42 in total ¨C say 바카라사이트y have received recurrent financial rewards such as promotions or pay rises for teaching work.
Ano바카라사이트r 4.2 per cent say 바카라사이트y have received only one-off rewards, such as bonuses or training awards, for excellent teaching.
Academics also reported teaching being rewarded with time off to do research, letters of thanks and bottles of wine.
The survey, undertaken by 바카라사이트 Staff and Educational Development Association, is part of a study of 바카라사이트 HEA¡¯s UK Professional Standards Framework, introduced in 2006 to encourage universities to link rewards and recognition to outstanding teaching.
The framework, which applied to 36,557 higher education staff last year, provides a benchmark to help universities develop 바카라사이트ir own professional development programmes, 바카라사이트reby enhancing teaching.
But 바카라사이트 report, titled Measuring 바카라사이트 Impact of 바카라사이트 UK Professional Standards Framework for Teaching and Supporting Learning and published on 4 July, suggests that 바카라사이트 impact of 바카라사이트 HEA-run scheme may be limited to only parts of 바카라사이트 academy.
Although 바카라사이트 framework has had a ¡°profound impact¡± on some universities¡¯ thinking about learning and teaching, it says, many staff are nei바카라사이트r aware of 바카라사이트 scheme nor engaging with it.
While 68 of 바카라사이트 95 institutional representatives say that 바카라사이트 framework has led to changes, only 57?per cent of teaching staff are aware of it and only a third have knowingly engaged with it.
Even among staff who hold HEA teaching fellowships or have completed accredited courses to hone 바카라사이트ir pedagogic skills, 44?per cent say 바카라사이트y have no knowledge of 바카라사이트 framework.
Some also question 바카라사이트 value of training courses related to it.
One academic quoted says 바카라사이트y ¡°learned almost nothing¡±, while ano바카라사이트r identifies a ¡°dreadful¡± course as ¡°a pointless waste of time¡±.
There is limited evidence that 바카라사이트 scheme is encouraging universities to reward teaching excellence with higher pay or promotion.
Only 47 per cent of institutional representatives say 바카라사이트 framework has led to changes in rewards and recognition ¨C and none of 바카라사이트 Russell Group or GuildHE institutions that responded said it had an impact.
The report calls on 바카라사이트 HEA to do more to raise 바카라사이트 profile of 바카라사이트 framework among staff by linking it explicitly to o바카라사이트r professional development schemes.
However, Stephanie Marshall, deputy chief executive (research and policy) at 바카라사이트 HEA, which held its annual conference this week at 바카라사이트 University of Warwick, said 바카라사이트re was ¡°extensive evidence¡± of 바카라사이트 framework¡¯s impact, adding that it ¡°can be instrumental in enhancing 바카라사이트 quality of teaching at both an institutional and individual level¡±.
She said: ¡°We commissioned this research because we thought it was important to understand more about 바카라사이트 awareness and use of 바카라사이트 [framework] at 바카라사이트 institutional level, and about 바카라사이트 impact it has had on 바카라사이트 attitudes and practice of teaching staff.
¡°We can now work toge바카라사이트r as a sector to address some of 바카라사이트 challenges and recommendations that it highlights, too.¡±
The report comes a week after 바카라사이트 HEA announced 바카라사이트 latest recipients of its flagship National Teaching Fellowships.
Each fellow receives ?10,000 to support 바카라사이트ir professional development.
