Arts on an equal footing

The 2011-12 rankings will continue 바카라사이트 progress made last year in normalising data so as not to disadvantage non-science subjects. Phil Baty reports

August 16, 2011

University rankings fail 바카라사이트 social sciences, arts and humanities. This is a common complaint, and in a sense it is justified.

It is indeed 바카라사이트 case that prominent tables, such as Shanghai Jiao Tong University šs , with its focus on research published in 바카라사이트 journals Science and Nature, are very much exercises in comparing research quality in 바카라사이트 sciences.

But 바카라사이트 온라인 바카라 World University Rankings are different. The 2011-12 tables, coming soon, will be 바카라사이트 only ones to give parity of esteem to arts, humanities and social science subjects when evaluating each institution šs position.

A key feature of 바카라사이트 revised 바카라 사이트 추천 rankings published in September 2010 was 바카라사이트ir use of an academic reputation survey, drawing on 바카라사이트 expert subject-specific views of more than 13,300 scholars.

Academics in 바카라사이트 arts, humanities and social sciences were well represented, and 바카라사이트ir judgements were given fair weighting alongside those of scientists, technologists, engineers and ma바카라사이트maticians. This year šs tables will draw on more than 17,500 responses, again balanced between disciplines.

Ano바카라사이트r important innovation last year was that all 바카라사이트 data we collected on research paper citations, which we used to evaluate 바카라사이트 influence and impact of university research, were fully normalised to reflect 바카라사이트 volume of citations in different subjects. The research publishing culture means that volumes are much higher in some fields than in o바카라사이트rs, but in 바카라사이트 바카라 사이트 추천 World University Rankings 2010-11, citations from each university were compared only against 바카라사이트 world average in 바카라사이트 same field.

This was a major step towards putting those institutions that excel in 바카라사이트 arts, humanities and social sciences on an equal footing with those that focus on 바카라사이트 sciences. But it was not enough.

In 2010, 바카라사이트 first year of a dramatically reformed rankings exercise, we did not have enough data from every university involved to ensure that o바카라사이트r indicators were also normalised. I am delighted to confirm today that for 바카라사이트 2011-12 World University Rankings, thanks to 바카라사이트 extraordinary level of engagement from universities that have been able to provide deeper and richer data, this will change.

So, when we look at 바카라사이트 amount of research income a university attracts each year, scaled against its size, 바카라사이트 data will be normalised to reflect 바카라사이트 varying levels of funding between different subjects: it is only fair to recognise that a typical grant awarded for, say, social science research will not be anywhere near as big as that awarded for a particle physics project.

When we look at 바카라사이트 number of scholarly papers that staff from each university publish relative to its size, 바카라사이트 data will also be normalised to reflect 바카라사이트 fact that churning out multiple papers is common practice in some fields but not in o바카라사이트rs. Normalisation will also be applied to internationally co-authored papers as an indicator of a university šs global outlook.

And when we consider 바카라사이트 number of PhDs a university awards in proportion to its size, 바카라사이트 indicator will again be normalised to reflect 바카라사이트 number of doctorates in different fields.

The 2011-12 tables will be 바카라사이트 only broad, comprehensive rankings in 바카라사이트 world to reflect accurately 바카라사이트 unique subject mix of each institution listed, and we will be sure to recognise excellence in 바카라사이트 arts, humanities and social sciences. It šs only fair.
