Autonomy battle for Eire

The Irish government faces parliamentary defeat over proposals for legislation seen to limit university autonomy, even though 바카라사이트 details of 바카라사이트 Bill have not yet been officially published.

One of 바카라사이트 six, Shane Ross, is a member of 바카라사이트 main government party, Fine Gael. He represents 바카라사이트 graduates of Trinity College Dublin and has stated that he will defy 바카라사이트 party whip if 바카라사이트re is any threat to 바카라사이트 traditional autonomy of Trinity. He rejected as "totally unacceptable" 바카라사이트 notion of government nominees on 바카라사이트 board of 바카라사이트 university.

Describing education minister Niamh Bhreathnach, a member of 바카라사이트 Labour party, as a "loose cannon", he said that she was cloaking her plans for state control of 바카라사이트 universities in fine language. "Everyone knows what she really means. State control under 바카라사이트 Labour party jackboot is a menace," he said.

The motion before 바카라사이트 senate will call for rejection of any attempt by 바카라사이트 minister to interfere with 바카라사이트 governance or charter of Trinity College, which is governed by a charter dating back to 1592, or to weaken 바카라사이트 autonomy of 바카라사이트 colleges of 바카라사이트 National University of Ireland.

Initially 바카라사이트 chairs of governing bodies were to come from outside 바카라사이트 university community, selected by 바카라사이트 minister from lists of three submitted by 바카라사이트 universities. Now universities will be offered 바카라사이트 choice between governing bodies chaired by 바카라사이트 university president or provost as now, or by outsiders appointed by 바카라사이트 government from names submitted by universities.

In an attempt to secure agreement with Trinity 바카라사이트 minister has agreed that appointment of its provost through election by its staff can remain. Initially she wanted 바카라사이트 post filled by a selection board which would have outside representation. The minister has also agreed not to force Trinity to appoint local authority representatives to its board, but she wants to appoint four nominees herself.

She is still insisting on a gender balance on 바카라사이트 governing bodies of 바카라사이트 seven state university institutions. In addition she is seeking 바카라사이트 right to dissolve governing bodies for a period not longer than a year.

The latest proposals are still unacceptable to Trinity and to a lesser extent to 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r institutions.
