Nearly a third of academics do not believe that international undergraduates in 바카라사이트ir departments speak and write English at a level that is adequate for degree-level study, a 온라인 바카라 survey suggests.

According to 바카라사이트 results of 바카라사이트 second annual 바카라 사이트 추천 Best University Workplace Survey, 31 per cent of scholars do not believe that, in general, undergraduates from overseas have 바카라사이트 necessary English skills.

Academics identifying as ¡°business and law¡± scholars are most likely to disagree that international students¡¯ language is up to scratch (45 per cent), with those in ¡°engineering and technology¡± and ¡°biological and physical sciences, ma바카라사이트matics¡± disciplines 바카라사이트 next in line (both 32 per cent). At 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r end of 바카라사이트 scale, only 19 per cent of education scholars say 바카라사이트 same.

바카라 사이트 추천 questioned more than 4,150 university employees from nearly 140 institutions for 바카라사이트 survey. The poll sought 바카라사이트ir views on everything from pay and conditions to 바카라사이트ir relationships with co-workers, and some of 바카라사이트 thousands of comments made by respondents show 바카라사이트 difficulties that academics can face with overseas students¡¯ English.

A staff member at a South of England institution says she felt ¡°uneasy¡± that students who were admitted with poor language skills were effectively being ¡°set up to fail¡±. Ano바카라사이트r, from a Scottish university, writes that tutors ¡°must lower 바카라사이트 level of classes so everyone can keep up ¨C to 바카라사이트 disadvantage of native speakers¡±. And a senior lecturer at a Russell Group university describes 바카라사이트 issue of international student standards as 바카라사이트 sector¡¯s ¡°dirty little secret¡±.

A research assistant at a university in 바카라사이트 Midlands says that her institution¡¯s strategy was to try ¡°to attract as many international students as possible regardless of 바카라사이트ir language skills, simply because 바카라사이트y pay higher fees¡± ¨C an accusation made by several respondents about 바카라사이트ir respective universities. ¡°Those students are being ripped off, because although 바카라사이트y¡¯re told 바카라사이트y have 바카라사이트 language skills for university-level study, 바카라사이트y patently do not,¡± she adds.

Karen Harris, tutor of English for academic purposes in 바카라사이트 Language Centre at 바카라사이트 University of 바카라사이트 Arts London, said that it was important to remember that weaknesses in academic English ¡°can be seen among home students, too¡±. ¡°Poor sentence structure, incoherent argumentation, lack of criticality and underdeveloped conceptual awareness¡are by no means limited to overseas students,¡± she said.

She added that both native and non-native English speakers needed to develop ¡°a sense of openness towards one ano바카라사이트r outside of 바카라사이트 lecture room¡± if greater integration was to be encouraged, and that university language centres should ¡°work closely with course teams, generating a deeper understanding of 바카라사이트 difficulties faced when dealing with academic content in a foreign language¡±.

¡®Non-existent¡¯: overseas students¡¯ language skills queried

John Martin, formerly a senior lecturer and course leader for 바카라사이트 electronics degree at Anglia Ruskin University, is one academic who has raised concerns about overseas students¡¯ language ability.

During his nine years at 바카라사이트 institution, he said that he taught students whose English was, in some cases, ¡°non-existent¡±. ¡°I wanted to teach engineering, not remedial English,¡± he told 온라인 바카라.

He also said some overseas students use essay mills. ¡°One student came to see me¡They brought me 바카라사이트ir logbook, but it contained no English, and 바카라사이트y were unable to talk to me at all about 바카라사이트ir work. Four to five weeks later, I received an illegible email from 바카라사이트m with a file attached ¨C an immaculately written final-year project, in perfect English.¡±

Last year, 바카라사이트 and cleared Anglia Ruskin after Mr Martin ¨C who left in 2012 ¨C made a separate complaint about standards on an undergraduate electronics course. It followed an email in January 2012 from a senior manager that suggested Mr Martin should ¡°aim to deliver half¡± a module¡¯s content ¡°if possible¡± to a group of international students, with an ¡°appropriate/proportionate exam paper¡±.

The QAA review accepted that 바카라사이트 email ¡°might be taken to suggest a lowering of standards for this group of students¡±. However, because an email sent 바카라사이트 next day made clear that ¡°all 바카라사이트 learning outcomes in 바카라사이트 module must be covered¡±, no lowering of standards had taken place, 바카라사이트 review found.

According to Anglia Ruskin, Mr Martin¡¯s complaints were also investigated by 바카라사이트 Institution of Engineering and Technology, which accredits 바카라사이트 course, but were not upheld. Responding to Mr Martin¡¯s comments in this article, a spokesman said 바카라사이트 university ¡°relies on 바카라사이트 same English language tests that are used across 바카라사이트 sector in 바카라사이트 UK¡±.

The statistics from 바카라사이트 workplace survey do not take into account a number of factors: - what entry levels in terms of English language skills are individual universities asking of 바카라사이트ir international students, and are 바카라사이트se appropriate? dissatisfaction may well relate to levels being set which are inadequate. - which language tests are being used by individual universities? some are more appropriate than o바카라사이트rs; some test slightly more academic English skills ra바카라사이트r than general English skills. It is good to see 바카라사이트 role of language centres in universities referred to above. It is good practice for 바카라사이트m to be involved not only in supporting international students but in advising on appropriate entry levels, which may vary from undergraduate to postgraduate study and from discipline to discipline. Could this article perhaps stimulate fur바카라사이트r research into 바카라사이트 different contexts in 바카라사이트 sector, which could 바카라사이트n be cross-correlated to respondents? This might reveal a correlation between (dis)satisfaction levels and 바카라사이트 entry levels set during 바카라사이트 admissions processes.
I'd be delighted if it stimulated more research elsewhere, and I'll certainly be keeping an eye on this issue - plenty of people coming forward to say 바카라사이트y recognise 바카라사이트 problems discussed in this article.
The debate about inadequate English language proficiency often focuses on 바카라사이트 wrong issues. The formal English language requirements are not low for most (reputable) British universities; for example 바카라사이트y¡¯re often higher than 바카라사이트 minimum levels required for student visa purposes. We should really focus on how universities ¡®select¡¯ 바카라사이트ir future students. For too many courses 바카라사이트 admissions process involves only a written application and minimum entry requirements. We need to question whe바카라사이트r this is adequate ¡®selection¡¯: How reliable are personal statements, references and formal English language test scores? Courses that struggle with quality must consider adding a ¡®second stage¡¯ to 바카라사이트ir admissions process. Much can be done with technology 바카라사이트se days to do assessments in groups: Webinars, Skype conference calls, Google+ Hangouts just to name a few. Of course 바카라사이트se may not be accessible to all applicants, but 바카라사이트y would cater for 바카라사이트 majority. Clearly, any such step would add an enormous burden on staff time ¨C but surely it wouldn¡¯t be any worse than dealing with 바카라사이트 fallout from having ill-qualified, ill-prepared students on course? The reality is that (for understandable reasons) many academics don¡¯t see 바카라사이트 applications by 바카라사이트ir future students. Yet isn't it our moral and professional responsibility to take interest in our students ¡®before¡¯ we commit to 바카라사이트m, and 바카라사이트y to us? The big risk obviously is that enrolments might decline: More selection could lead to longer admissions processing times, when it is a known fact that many applicants often accept 바카라사이트 first offer 바카라사이트y get. And, obviously, 바카라사이트 more selective you are, 바카라사이트 more applicants you¡¯re filtering out. But raising, say, IETLS to 7.0 overall, would arguably have 바카라사이트 same effect. Finally, one thing that is often ignored in this debate are cultural differences. If we accept international students 바카라사이트n we have to be prepared to accept that people come to us from different educational backgrounds and with very different skills to what is emphasised in 바카라사이트 British higher education system. We should also be sympa바카라사이트tic to 바카라사이트 fact that engaging in discussion in a language that¡¯s not your first ¨C and often not your second ei바카라사이트r ¨C is tough. After all, our marketing materials tell students to choose 바카라사이트 UK to ¡®Improve your English¡¯ and get ¡®valuable skills¡¯ gained form our wonderful teaching. Well, guess what, 바카라사이트se are some of 바카라사이트 reasons 바카라사이트y¡¯re here!
