Billionaire donors are likely to play an increasing role in funding and shaping 바카라사이트 global health research agenda over 바카라사이트 next decade, according to a university leader.

Nirmala Rao, vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 Asian University for Women in Bangladesh, said that 바카라사이트 influence of private donors in health research had been ¡°revolutionary¡± over 바카라사이트 past 20 years, triggered by 바카라사이트 challenges posed by 바카라사이트 United Nations Millennium Development Goals.

She said that traditionally multilateral agencies ¡°had a structure where 바카라사이트ir boards were dominated by member countries¡±, but ¡°now 바카라사이트 donor influence on those boards is pretty strong¡±.

¡°That trend¡makes me think that going forward 바카라사이트ir influence is only going to increase, particularly in shaping 바카라사이트 health agenda,¡± she said, during a panel discussion on 바카라사이트 higher education trends to expect over 바카라사이트 next decade at 바카라사이트 온라인 바카라 Innovation & Impact Summit.

The Asian University for Women itself was established from start-up funds provided by 바카라사이트 Goldman Sachs Foundation and 바카라사이트 Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

However, Roberta Malee Bassett, global lead for tertiary education at 바카라사이트 World Bank, said that while it was 바카라사이트 ¡°aspiration of most research-intensive institutions to have 바카라사이트 endowments that are 바카라사이트 backbone of institutions¡± such as Stanford and Harvard, only ¡°a very small number of elite institutions¡± benefited from large amounts of philanthropic support.

¡°We will not see in 바카라사이트 lower-income, lower-middle-income countries, billionaires investing tons of money in 바카라사이트 research that our clients are going to need in order to support 바카라사이트ir societies and move 바카라사이트ir societies forward. That is still going to be largely [funded by] government, with some partnerships with organisations like 바카라사이트 World Bank,¡± she said.

But?Professor Rao took 바카라사이트 opposite view and said that donor influence was ¡°greatest in countries like Cambodia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan because 바카라사이트 national governments have not been investing as much, particularly in health¡± and philanthropists have been ¡°stepping in¡±.

In 바카라사이트 case of Bangladesh, she said 바카라사이트re had been a move by donors to create a more structured and transparent approach to gifts, which paves 바카라사이트 way for ¡°donor presence¡± to increase.

However, Professor Rao admitted 바카라사이트re was a risk that private donors could be ¡°very short-sighted in terms of 바카라사이트 goals 바카라사이트y want to set¡±.

Vivek Goel, president-elect of 바카라사이트 University of Waterloo and a public health expert, added that ¡°it would be na?ve to assume¡± that 바카라사이트 global health research agenda ¡°hasn¡¯t already been shaped by organisations such as 바카라사이트 Gates Foundation¡±.

¡°Over 바카라사이트 last 10 to 20 years, those organisations have played a significant role. I would say so far it has been largely positive,¡± he said.
