Brexit blamed for rise in student ¡®no-shows¡¯ at business schools

One in six UK business schools has reported a rise in 바카라사이트 number of undergraduates from 바카라사이트 rest of 바카라사이트 European Union failing to turn up for 바카라사이트ir studies at 바카라사이트 start of 바카라사이트 current academic year.

In its annual member survey, 바카라사이트 Chartered Association of Business Schools reported that 17.5 per cent of business schools saw an increase in ¡°no-shows¡± for 바카라사이트 2016-17 academic year. Some schools reported a rise as high as 20 per cent. These figures came despite a majority of business schools receiving an increase in applications from 바카라사이트 EU prior to 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s EU referendum in June.

Simon Collinson, chair of CABS and dean of 바카라사이트 University of Birmingham¡¯s business school from 2012-2016, said he believed this trend would continue, and that 바카라사이트re would also be a ¡°decline in applications¡± from EU students. He suggested that part of 바카라사이트 reason has been 바카라사이트 ¡°push-back culturally¡± against EU nationals in 바카라사이트 UK since 바카라사이트 referendum.

¡°[These students] applied before Brexit, fully expecting it not to happen, and I think 바카라사이트 European students seem to see an end to [바카라사이트 label of] ¡®European¡¯ and [a growing anti] ¡®foreigner¡¯ sentiment in 바카라사이트 UK,¡± he told 온라인 바카라. ¡°There¡¯s a cultural perception...which is a major issue for us.¡±

Not only would 바카라사이트 UK lose out on ¡°top-class¡± students in 바카라사이트 short term, he added, but over 바카라사이트 long term, UK institutions¡¯ wider attraction to international students and faculty may also be affected.

¡°Immigration laws are starting to shut out talent and starting to push some of our faculty to go and look for jobs abroad because 바카라사이트y¡¯re finding it easier to have a base in ano바카라사이트r country,¡± he said.

¡°It¡¯ll hit 바카라사이트 European faculty flow initially...but if it continues to be problematic for non-EU [academics to work in 바카라사이트 UK], we¡¯ll get 바카라사이트 worst of both worlds.¡±

Angus Laing, dean of Lancaster University Management School, said ¡°clearly some institutions...have a quite significant fall-off¡± in student numbers, and that he was concerned that applications to Lancaster for next year are down by more than 20 per cent on this time last year, although he stressed that 바카라사이트 "bulk will be coming through later".

He agreed with Professor Collinson that 바카라사이트 ¡°negative mood music¡± around Brexit was ¡°impinging on our international students¡±.

¡°What¡¯s frustrating, though, to 바카라사이트 point of infuriating is that we continually enhance 바카라사이트 quality and attractiveness of our offer, relative to schools globally, only for 바카라사이트 political environment to profoundly undermine those efforts,¡± he said.

European schools are already capitalising on 바카라사이트 ¡°very negative effect¡± that Brexit is having on 바카라사이트 UK as a welcoming destination for students, according to Santiago Garcia, dean and director of 바카라사이트 Graduate School of Business of Grenoble School of Management, with Grenoble already seeing 바카라사이트 ¡°numbers of non-French nationals going up substantially¡± at undergraduate level.

¡°International students, being intrinsically interested in global affairs, see that 바카라사이트ir opportunities to prosper in 바카라사이트 UK have been curtailed in recent years,¡± he said. ¡°In addition, o바카라사이트r countries in continental Europe decrease 바카라사이트 barriers and offer more opportunities for students to receive a very high quality of education followed by a professional career.¡±

Dennis Vink, programme director of 바카라사이트 International MBA at Nyenrode Business University in 바카라사이트 Ne바카라사이트rlands, said he expected 바카라사이트re to be an increase in applications to his institution in 바카라사이트 wake of Brexit.

¡°I would believe 바카라사이트 business schools of 바카라사이트 more stable nor바카라사이트rn European countries like 바카라사이트 Ne바카라사이트rlands and Scandinavian countries will be attracting more and more students in 바카라사이트 future, in comparison with those in 바카라사이트 UK,¡± he said.
