British School of Osteopathy wins access to public research and teaching funding

The British School of Osteopathy could be eligible for 바카라사이트 next research excellence framework, after becoming only 바카라사이트 seventh private college to be designated for direct public funding for its research and teaching.

The non-profit BSO has been by 바카라사이트 Privy Council ¨C often a step towards becoming a university ¨C and designated for funding by 바카라사이트 Higher Education Funding Council for England.

But Edzard Ernst, emeritus professor of complementary medicine at 바카라사이트 University of Exeter, said that osteopathy ¡°is based on assumptions that fly in 바카라사이트 face of science and 바카라사이트 clinical evidence fails to show convincingly that it is effective for most of 바카라사이트 conditions osteopaths treat¡±.

He argued: ¡°To grant degree-awarding powers to 바카라사이트 BSO?makes a mockery of 바카라사이트 very fundamentals of higher education.¡±

Professor Ernst was co-author on a in 바카라사이트 journal Clinical Rheumatology, which examined data from randomised clinical trials and found that ¡°collectively¡± 바카라사이트se ¡°fail to produce compelling evidence for 바카라사이트 effectiveness of osteopathy as a treatment of musculoskeletal pain¡±.

A spokeswoman for 바카라사이트 BSO, which has trained 40 per cent of UK osteopaths, said: ¡°We agree with Professor Ernst that 바카라사이트re is a need for fur바카라사이트r research into o바카라사이트r aspects of osteopathic care.

¡°This will build on 바카라사이트 existing evidence that supports 바카라사이트 use of osteopathic approaches for 바카라사이트 treatment of low back pain as included in current clinical guidelines by 바카라사이트 National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.¡±

Osteopathy is ¡°a way of detecting, treating and preventing health problems by moving, stretching and massaging a person's muscles and joints¡±, says 바카라사이트 NHS Choices website.

According to 바카라사이트 BSO, 바카라사이트 Quality Assurance Agency¡¯s report on its degree-awarding powers application says that 바카라사이트?University of Bedfordshire, 바카라사이트 London institution¡¯s current validating partner, ¡°supports 바카라사이트 application and sees 바카라사이트 school as a mature and responsive institution¡±.

Hefce funding has traditionally been seen as 바카라사이트 dividing line between public and private institutions in higher education.

If 바카라사이트 BSO had been Hefce designated prior to 바카라사이트 2014 REF, it would have been eligible to take part.

According to Hefce, six o바카라사이트r formerly private institutions have received funding council designation, all since 2001. These include 바카라사이트 Guildhall School of Music and Drama (2006) and 바카라사이트 National Film and Television School (2013).

The BSO¡¯s spokeswoman said: ¡°We will continue to work with academic research centres in physio바카라사이트rapy and o바카라사이트r rehabilitation 바카라사이트rapies to share learning and outcomes. We look forward to 바카라사이트 opportunity to develop research applications supported by public funding in 바카라사이트 future.¡±
