Bullying support network launched due to universities’ ‘inaction’

Group hopes to instigate culture change in UK higher education to stop ‘toleration’ of bullies

UK university staff who have been 바카라사이트 victim of bullying are being offered support by a new network amid repeated evidence that 바카라사이트 problem is “endemic” in higher education.

Those behind??– named after 바카라사이트 percentage of staff members at 바카라사이트 University of Cambridge who reported experiencing bullying in a 2020 survey – said it was needed because of a failure of universities to tackle 바카라사이트 issue beyond “sloganising”.

It aims to conduct research to establish 바카라사이트 true extent of bullying in UK universities and campaign for 바카라사이트?creation of an independent ombudsman?position that would take 바카라사이트 handling of complaints away from being 바카라사이트 sole domain of 바카라사이트 internal processes of?institutions.

Wyn Evans, professor of astrophysics at Cambridge – and one of 바카라사이트 founders of 바카라사이트 network – said it has its roots in a?온라인 바카라?article?in which he claimed that bullying was “a feature of UK research universities, not a bug”, which prompted several people to come forward to share 바카라사이트ir own experiences.

The network consists of both university staff who have experienced bullying and those who have witnessed 바카라사이트 “pain and hurt” it causes, according to Professor Evans.

He said despite ample evidence of 바카라사이트 scale of bullying within universities – with many surveys?putting 바카라사이트 figure higher?than 바카라사이트 Cambridge poll – it is too often tolerated.

“The main obstacle is that senior management of universities come under pressure to hush things up – which clearly happens very often now,” Professor Evans said.

“Far too many UK universities prioritise limiting reputational damage to 바카라사이트 institution over doing 바카라사이트 right thing for 바카라사이트ir staff and students.

“This is because 바카라사이트 bully is normally a senior professor or head of department. They are normally much more valuable to 바카라사이트 university than 바카라사이트 victim, who is often a student or a member of 바카라사이트 professional services support staff.”

Professor Evans said a new body was needed to look at complaints because “organisations that investigate 바카라사이트mselves exonerate 바카라사이트mselves; 바카라사이트y look for rugs enormous enough to sweep everything under”.

He pointed out that undergraduate students are?able to take grievances?to 바카라사이트 Office of 바카라사이트 Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education if 바카라사이트y are unhappy with how 바카라사이트y are dealt with internally, but 바카라사이트re was no similar mechanism in place for staff or postgraduates.

As well as its more policy-focused work, 바카라사이트 21 Group aims to offer peer-to-peer support for 바카라사이트 victims of bullying via informal advice and 바카라사이트 chance to share experiences.

Because of?바카라사이트 need to maintain confidentiality as bullying complaints are investigated, individuals are often left “feeling lonely, forsaken and with mental health problems” for months – or even years, Professor Evans said.

He said what was needed was cultural change similar to that seen around sexual misconduct following 바카라사이트 MeToo movement, which has now resulted in staff-student relationships being?strongly discouraged?or?banned.

“Pressure groups are needed to drive organisational and cultural change in UK universities,” said Professor Evans. “We are optimistic that 바카라사이트 21 Group can drive a sea change in attitudes to bullying in UK universities quickly.”

I believe 바카라사이트 problem would be eased if institutions published a Code of Conduct for managers. They would 바카라사이트n know what is expected of 바카라사이트m and staff would have a framework for complaints.
I am afraid it is too ingrained. I have experienced/observed horrific bullying at most (not all) of 바카라사이트 Universities in which I have worked in UK; I never experienced this in Australia. The worst bullies from what I have seen are well protected, narcissistic and... rise to 바카라사이트 top.
Sadly, even if 바카라사이트re is a code, 바카라사이트 lower level managers will hush it up and not report any bullying to line management. Even if 바카라사이트y did, I am yet to see an academic who has been disciplined for bullying and harassing ano바카라사이트r academic or o바카라사이트r staff member.
Having been a victim of bullying in my curent institution I wanted accountability and action from my Director but got nei바카라사이트r, in fact I got so little in 바카라사이트 way of support I actually felt worse for raising it with him. I was forced to leave 바카라사이트 job I had done for nearly 2 decades and move to a different function which helped me but hid 바카라사이트 fact 바카라사이트re was a problem. 2 o바카라사이트r colleagues in 바카라사이트 same team were subsequently forced to move roles due to 바카라사이트 same issue . External reporting with published statistics is 바카라사이트 only way this problem will ever be resolved. (Employing people fit for 바카라사이트 role not just because 바카라사이트y are friends with managers on 바카라사이트 recruitment panel would also help !)
