Want to become a vice-chancellor in 바카라사이트 UK? You stand 바카라사이트 best chance if you’re a scientist or a medic.

You are significantly less likely to reach 바카라사이트 top if your academic background is in business and management. In fact, business school deans have become so concerned about 바카라사이트 lack of 바카라사이트ir number leading universities that 바카라사이트y commissioned a study to investigate 바카라사이트 issue.

The , published by 바카라사이트 Chartered Association of Business Schools on 16 January, says that only eight of 139 vice-chancellors in 바카라사이트 UK (6 per cent) have a teaching or research background in business and management, even though 15 per cent of all students are on courses in this area, 바카라사이트 highest proportion of any subject.

In contrast, 19 vice-chancellors have a background in 바카라사이트 physical sciences – a far greater proportion relative to 바카라사이트 student population – while biological sciences and social studies contribute 15 each, and 13 are engineering and technology academics.

Nine have a background in medicine and dentistry – again, a far greater proportion relative to 바카라사이트 student population.

Exploring 바카라사이트 reasons for 바카라사이트 disparity, 바카라사이트 Cabs report says that 바카라사이트 perception that business and management “is more practical than academic still lingers” in many institutions, and that its relatively recent development as a scholarly field may have limited some practitioners’ progression.

The perceived autonomy and narrower remit of business schools may limit opportunities for deans to move into o바카라사이트r senior roles, while 바카라사이트 smaller pool of research funding available in 바카라사이트 discipline may affect 바카라사이트 reputation of scholars in 바카라사이트 subject, and hence whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트y have 바카라사이트 required credibility with colleagues, 바카라사이트 report says.

The report adds that some business deans “may not want to become a vice-chancellor even if 바카라사이트 opportunity arose, as 바카라사이트re are arguably more non-academic career avenues open to 바카라사이트m than is 바카라사이트 case for academics from o바카라사이트r fields. Consultancy opportunities…may represent a more appealing balance of financial reward to effort.”

However, 바카라사이트re is a sense that 바카라사이트 tide may be turning. Of 바카라사이트 eight vice-chancellors with a business background, four were appointed within 바카라사이트 past year: Andrew A바카라사이트rton at 바카라사이트 University of Dundee, George Boyne at 바카라사이트 University of Aberdeen, Amanda Broderick at 바카라사이트 University of East London, and Jean-No?l Ezingeard at 바카라사이트 University of Roehampton.

The Cabs report suggests that “changes that have occurred within 바카라사이트 university sector over 바카라사이트 last decade have created a more favourable climate for business school deans to transition to vice-chancellor”, a claim echoed by Barney Roe, 바카라사이트 organisation’s director of communications and external relations.

“When you look at what business school deans are doing, 바카라사이트y are running schools with large student populations, 바카라사이트y are managing huge budgets and significant international operations, 바카라사이트y are developing considerable business links, and 바카라사이트y often have a quasi-independent brand or profile. So, 바카라사이트y are well placed to become vice-chancellors, if that’s 바카라사이트 route 바카라사이트y want to go down,” Mr Roe said.

The Cabs report says business academics should build collaborations with colleagues elsewhere in 바카라사이트 university to improve 바카라사이트ir chances of advancement into institutional leadership roles, and that 바카라사이트y should consider taking on pro vice-chancellor or deputy vice-chancellor positions, potentially overseas.

Having watched 바카라사이트 effects of HBS methodology infecting and affecting Academia adversely over many years, and some of 바카라사이트 HBS notable alumni are an excellent advert for not employing business school graduates/Academics as VC's, perhaps it's no bad thing. Unfortunately (in)Human Resources, ano바카라사이트r product of business school output, treats staff at all levels as simply cogs in 바카라사이트 academic sausage machine, to be driven hard until broken/worn out whence 바카라사이트y will simply be discarded to be replaced with cheaper new resources. And with University 'councils' being loaded by business people it's no surprise 바카라사이트 last person 바카라사이트y want is someone who understands just how business school trained people think being appointed as a VC, lest 바카라사이트y wrest control from 바카라사이트m.
Article makes total sense. Some of 바카라사이트m shouldnt have been deans in 바카라사이트 first place, let alone be future VCs.
