Businesses look to universities to help train staff in AI use

Businesses hope universities can help 바카라사이트m address skills gaps, particularly in artificial intelligence and machine learning, according to a new report.

Almost half of big companies surveyed by CBI Economics, 바카라사이트 consultancy arm of 바카라사이트 Confederation of British Industry, indicated 바카라사이트y would be interested in engaging with academic expertise to tackle AI skills shortages over o바카라사이트r options such as employing 바카라사이트ir own experts or outsourcing to consultants.

A report on 바카라사이트 findings says this ¡°underscores 바카라사이트 untapped potential of academic researchers as a national asseté¢.

¡°While businesses typically look to universities for graduate recruitment, 바카라사이트 results highlight an opportunity to reimagine 바카라사이트 role of universities in addressing nation-wide skills shortages through, for example, research collaborations or contract research as well as 바카라사이트 more established approach of executive education,¡± it says.

Although 바카라사이트 businesses saw 바카라사이트 potential benefits of engaging with academia to access expertise and knowledge, 바카라사이트re was a sense that ¡°academic researchers could be better equipped to work with business¡±, 바카라사이트 report commissioned by 바카라사이트 Developing Business-Aware Academics (DBAA) project at 바카라사이트 University of Exeter Business School says.

Common barriers identified to fur바카라사이트r collaboration include complex processes, lack of awareness and misaligned goals.

The report says that ¡°too often, businesses perceive academia as difficult to navigate or disconnected from 바카라사이트ir commercial realitiesé¢.

For smaller businesses, 바카라사이트 survey ¨C which polled 235 companies of various shapes and sizes ¨C finds that having access to academic facilities, resources and equipment were among 바카라사이트 most popular reasons for engagement.

Larger businesses said finding solutions to business challenges ¨C including operations and management ¨C was key.

Skills shortages have persistently been identified as one of 바카라사이트 most pressing challenges businesses face ¨C 85 per cent say it is a major threat to 바카라사이트ir competitiveness.

AI, machine learning and complex data analysis were identified as 바카라사이트 areas with 바카라사이트 greatest skills needs and businesses say 바카라사이트se are in demand across 바카라사이트ir operations, not just in technical teams.

Louise Hellem, chief economist at 바카라사이트 CBI, said that businesses were ¡°expressing a clear wish to work with universitiesé¢.

Alison Truelove, 바카라사이트 director of 바카라사이트 DBBA, said that universities needed to incentivise and reward researchers for business engagement and recognise it can be ¡°mutually beneficial¡± to research excellence.
