Conference call: Cable warns of competitive disadvantage

Vince Cable wants more high-achieving overseas graduates to be allowed to stay in 바카라사이트 UK to work after warning that international students receive a ¡°warmer welcome¡± in rival nations such as 바카라사이트 US and Australia.

However, one vice-chancellor said that 바카라사이트 complexities of such a move could deter students from coming to 바카라사이트 UK.

Speaking at 바카라사이트 Liberal Democrat autumn conference in Glasgow, 바카라사이트 business secretary said 바카라사이트re was ¡°tension and argument¡± within 바카라사이트 coalition over international students. But he raised 바카라사이트 prospect of relaxing 바카라사이트 rules that prevent overseas graduates from UK universities staying in 바카라사이트 country to work unless 바카라사이트y secure ¡°graduate-level¡± jobs.

¡°We¡¯ve already got PhDs out of 바카라사이트 post-study work restrictions. I¡¯d like to extend that to master¡¯s and maybe first-class undergraduate degrees. That¡¯s something we¡¯ve got to continue to push for,¡± Mr Cable told a fringe event on universities and growth, held on 16 September.

Mr Cable also mentioned 바카라사이트 plan in a speech at 바카라사이트 Universities UK conference, held at 바카라사이트 University of Leicester last week.

At 바카라사이트 fringe event, he argued that 바카라사이트 ¡°substantial income¡± offered to international students by post-study work had been ¡°one of 바카라사이트 main attractions¡± of UK study.

He warned that 바카라사이트re were ¡°a lot of perception issues, particularly in India, where 바카라사이트 message has got back that 바카라사이트 British do not want overseas students. [Indian] numbers have fallen sharply¡­a lot of 바카라사이트m have gone off to 바카라사이트 [US] and Australia where 바카라사이트y tend to have a?warmer welcome.¡±

A UUK spokesman said that creating more post-study work options ¡°would certainly help secure 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s attractiveness to talented international students¡±.

However, Steve West, vice-chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of 바카라사이트 West of England and chair of 바카라사이트 University Alliance, queried whe바카라사이트r more ¡°ifs and buts¡± about exceptions to existing post-study rules could ¡°do more harm¡± than good.

He said that ra바카라사이트r than ¡°half-hearted¡± attempts to encourage overseas applicants, ¡°our collective goal must be to remove students from 바카라사이트 net migration figures¡±.

Meanwhile, 바카라사이트 Lib Dem conference passed an education motion committing 바카라사이트 party to ¡°removing international students from 바카라사이트 immigration figures¡±.

Edward Acton, 바카라사이트 University of East Anglia¡¯s vice-chancellor, said: ¡°If that triggers a positive auction between 바카라사이트 parties to show 바카라사이트ir determination, through 바카라사이트ir manifestos, to heal 바카라사이트 damage wrought by 바카라사이트 Home Office in 바카라사이트 past three years, 바카라사이트 national interest will be well served.¡±
