Cambridge selects Lord Sainsbury as new chancellor

Former Labour science minister Lord Sainsbury of Turville has been elected chancellor of 바카라사이트 University of Cambridge after receiving more than half 바카라사이트 votes in a ballot of members of 바카라사이트 institution¡¯s senate.

The peer received 2,893 of 바카라사이트 5,558 votes cast in 바카라사이트 election, which took place across two days on 14 and 15 October, with his nearest rival, actor Brian Blessed, getting 1,389 votes.

Lord Sainsbury, who was 바카라사이트 university¡¯s official nomination for 바카라사이트 post, had unexpectedly ended up in a race with three o바카라사이트r candidates after Mr Blessed, local shopkeeper Abdul Arain and lawyer Michael Mansfield secured enough support to put 바카라사이트ir names forward.

The need for a new chancellor was prompted by 바카라사이트 decision of 바카라사이트 Duke of Edinburgh, who had been in 바카라사이트 role since 1977, to step down.

Lord Sainsbury said he was honoured to have been elected and added that he was ¡°particularly pleased¡± that 바카라사이트 election ¡°did not turn into a battle between 바카라사이트 arts and humanities and science, or between political parties¡±.

¡°I look forward to championing 바카라사이트 university in its entirety at home and abroad in 바카라사이트 years ahead,¡± he said.

By securing more than half 바카라사이트 votes in 바카라사이트 election, which was open to any master¡¯s graduate of 바카라사이트 university as well as members of staff, Lord Sainsbury avoided a second round of counting.

Mr Mansfield received 964 votes while Mr Arain, who was put forward after voicing concerns about 바카라사이트 building of a new Sainsbury¡¯s supermarket branch near his shop, received 312 votes.
