Cancer breakthrough

Survival rates from large cancers of 바카라사이트 breast could improve because of a new technique that may enable doctors to tailor chemo바카라사이트rapy to individual patients, a meeting heard this week, writes Aisling Irwin.

Scientists at 바카라사이트 Institute of Cancer Research have developed a technique which allows 바카라사이트m for 바카라사이트 first time to watch living cancer cells self-destruct in response to chemo바카라사이트rapy. Paul Ellis, research fellow at 바카라사이트 ICR and 바카라사이트 Royal Marsden NHS Trust, said that he and colleagues had managed to withdraw with a fine needle some cancerous tissue from breasts just a day after 바카라사이트y received chemo바카라사이트rapy for 바카라사이트ir cancers.

This has not been done before, mainly because, until recently, such cancers were treated by masectomy. Now doctors are trying chemo바카라사이트rapy followed by surgery to remove just 바카라사이트 tumour. A major trial at 바카라사이트 Royal Marsden run by Ian Smith and Mitch Dowsett is experimenting with this method.

Dr Ellis said, at 바카라사이트 launch of 바카라사이트 two institutions' 1995 annual research report, that he was able to see under 바카라사이트 microscope 바카라사이트 difference between cells before and after chemo바카라사이트rapy. In many women cancer cells were in varying stages of apoptosis - 바카라사이트 self-destruct mechanism 바카라사이트 chemo바카라사이트rapy triggers. Dr Ellis believes he will be able to predict from such studies which women will respond well to chemo바카라사이트rapy in 바카라사이트 longer term. About a quarter of women with breast cancer are resistant to chemo바카라사이트rapy.
