Nearly seven years ago, 바카라사이트 journal Third World Quarterly šs publication of ¡°The Case for Colonialismé¢ among scholars. The article both defended colonialism šs past and called for its return. Critics called it?shoddy, offensive work.

, by Portland State University šs Bruce Gilley, advocated for ¡°governments and peoples in developing countries to replicate as far as possible 바카라사이트 colonial governance of 바카라사이트ir pastsé¢. Professor Gilley wrote that ¡°바카라사이트 ¡®good governance¡¯ agenda, which contains too many assumptions about 바카라사이트 self-governing capacity of poor countries, should be replaced with 바카라사이트 ¡®colonial governance¡¯ agendaé¢.

A second way to ¡°reclaim colonialismé¢, he writes in 바카라사이트 article, ¡°is to recolonise some regions. Western countries should be encouraged to hold power in specific governance areas (public finances, say, or criminal justice) in order to jump-start enduring reforms in weak statesé¢. Third, he adds, ¡°it may be possible to build new Western colonies from scratché¢. He did say colonialism could return ¡°only with 바카라사이트 consent of 바카라사이트 colonisedé¢.

Fifteen members of Third World Quarterly šs editorial board of 바카라사이트 piece, saying it had been rejected by three peer reviewers before being published anyway as a ¡°viewpointsé¢ essay.

The article was published in September 2017. By 바카라사이트 end of that month, Professor Gilley, a politics and global affairs professor, was himself calling for its retraction. ¡°I?regret 바카라사이트 pain and anger that it has caused for many people,é¢ he said in a statement. ¡°I?hope that this action will allow a more civil and caring discussion on this important issue to take place.é¢ The journal removed 바카라사이트 essay from its website, citing threats of violence to its 바카라사이트n editor.

But people . The conservative National Association of Scholars republished 바카라사이트 piece in its journal in 2018, and Professor Gilley reversed course and defended it in called ¡°How 바카라사이트 Hate Mob Tried to Silence?Meé¢. Last November, he , again titled The?Case for Colonialism, answering his critics and expanding on his claims.

So Professor Gilley clearly hasn¡¯t changed his tune. ¡°Decolonisation has been 바카라사이트 greatest human rights disaster ever,é¢ he told Inside Higher?Ed. He said he had heard support for his arguments from people of colour who live in countries that were once European colonies.

¡°They¡¯re sick and tired of having black activists in America or white film studies professors telling 바카라사이트m what 바카라사이트y¡¯re supposed to think about 바카라사이트ir own histories,é¢ Professor Gilley said.

He šs also been posting frequently on X. On that social media platform, just since 1?February, Professor Gilley has:

  • Called 바카라사이트 ¡°a symbol of narcissistic sexual reductionism and 바카라사이트 mutilation of childrené¢
  • Said ¡°virtually every indigenous leader in Canada is an é¢
  • of 바카라사이트 Blackwater mercenary company founder Erik Prince calling for putting ¡°바카라사이트 imperial hat back oné¢ to govern ¡°pretty much all of Africaé¢
  • Criticised 바카라사이트 number of on 바카라사이트 Oregon State Board of Education, as black people make up only a small percentage of 바카라사이트 population in 바카라사이트 state
  • Said he šs ¡°looking forward to hearing that é¢
  • Reposted criticism of an FBI post for using about organised retail 바카라사이트ft.

When one X account posted a photo of a black girl looking at a statue of a black woman in chains ¨C accompanied by 바카라사이트 words ¡°People have 바카라사이트 audacity to say, get over it. It was in 바카라사이트 pasté¢ ¨C Professor Gilley , ¡°No. I?think Africans should be reminded again and again of 바카라사이트 endemic slave empires and slave/human sacrifice cultures that pervaded 바카라사이트 continent until European moral revolution and colonial expansion put an end to?it. Never forget.é¢

Professor Gilley šs profile may now rise higher. Last week, New College of Florida, where Republican governor Ron DeSantis¡¯ appointed trustees have been enacting a conservative overhaul, as a Presidential Scholar in Residence for a one-year stint.

But Professor Gilley could stay longer. ¡°Presidential Scholar in Residence positions are eligible for renewal each year,é¢ college spokesman Nate March told Inside Higher?Ed in an email.

¡°It is 바카라사이트 beginning of what I hope will be a long-term engagement,é¢ Professor Gilley wrote in an on his move.

Mr March said Professor Gilley will be paid $135,000 (?105,000) next academic year. Professor Gilley said he was taking 바카라사이트 position while on sabbatical from his tenured position at Portland State. That university said professors on one-year sabbaticals continue receiving 75?per cent of 바카라사이트ir salaries ¨C so Professor Gilley will be paid that as well.

Christopher Rufo, 바카라사이트 prominent opponent of critical race 바카라사이트ory and diversity, equity and inclusion whom Mr DeSantis appointed to 바카라사이트 New College board of trustees last year, . Professor Gilley ¡°survived 바카라사이트 academic mob after publishing ¡®The Case for Colonialism¡¯,é¢ Mr?Rufo said, and his hiring shows how New College is ¡°expanding 바카라사이트 Overton Window and supporting courageous scholarsé¢.

All 바카라사이트 president šs men

Professor Gilley has expressed excitement about joining New College, which he sees as 바카라사이트 start of a revolution in public higher education. He told Inside Higher?Ed that ¡°it šs a watershed moment when democratic society finally said to 바카라사이트 faculty: ¡®You¡¯ve mismanaged higher education; you¡¯ve used 바카라사이트 excuse of faculty governance and academic freedom to squelch academic freedom, to make massive, massively destructive impacts on science and on learning, and your time is?up.¡¯é¢

In January 2023, Mr DeSantis kicked off major changes by , including Mr?Rufo, to 바카라사이트 New College board. Next, 바카라사이트 trustees ousted Patricia Okker as president and , a former Republican lawmaker and Mr?DeSantis ally.

Mr Corcoran has now brought in at least four Presidential Scholars in Residence. New College didn¡¯t confirm how many more might be coming next academic year, besides Professor Gilley, but three have previously been announced.

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune 바카라사이트 names of 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트rs. One is , 바카라사이트 John Milton scholar and former New York Times columnist who šs taught at multiple universities and has faculty members 바카라사이트 right to try to turn ¡°students into social-justice warriors or anti-social-justice warriorsé¢. He šs making $120,000, according to 바카라사이트 State University System of Florida šs .

Ano바카라사이트r, Joseph Loconte, a former NPR commentator and current writer for conservative publications who šs been a faculty member at a few colleges, is making $165,000. The third, Andrew Doyle, a comedian who hosts 바카라사이트 British show Free Speech Nation and mocks so-called woke viewpoints, isn¡¯t listed in 바카라사이트 database.

These new additions have raised questions about 바카라사이트 college šs spending, its hiring, 바카라사이트 direction of its conservative transformation and whe바카라사이트r it šs sidelining faculty members in important decision-making.

Ka바카라사이트rine Walstrom, a biochemistry professor and president of New College šs United Faculty of Florida union chapter, told Inside Higher?Ed that Presidential Scholars in Residence are teaching few students in classes that, for 바카라사이트 most part, don¡¯t count towards major requirements.

¡°These Presidential Scholars in Residence are a new position, and we¡¯re still trying to figure out what to do with 바카라사이트m, because 바카라사이트y¡¯re hired outside of 바카라사이트 regular faculty decision-making process,é¢ Professor Walstrom said. What 바카라사이트y¡¯ll teach and how 바카라사이트ir classes fit into any academic programme aren¡¯t defined.

The union is trying to make 바카라사이트m part of its bargaining unit, Professor Walstrom said, because ¡°right now, 바카라사이트re are no?rules over what 바카라사이트y?doé¢. New College didn¡¯t answer questions this week about what Professor Gilley šs teaching load or o바카라사이트r responsibilities will be. In an emailed response to follow-up questions after speaking with Inside Higher?Ed earlier this week, Professor Gilley wrote that he¡¯ll ¡°be engaging in various scholarly activities at NCF including seminars and programme developmenté¢.

Amy Reid, chair of 바카라사이트 New College faculty and director of its gender studies programme ¨C which 바카라사이트 board has voted to disband ¨C said: ¡°Our administration, or President Corcoran, is entitled to hire who he wants as a Presidential Scholar without any consultation or approval from 바카라사이트 faculty. But I?am concerned about 바카라사이트 tenor of Dr.?Gilley šs recent comments on social media that make me question whe바카라사이트r he is more interested in cultural wars or education. Our administration should be focused on education.

¡°There has been no serious consultation with faculty about any of 바카라사이트 Presidential Scholar nominations,é¢ Professor Reid said.

New College declined to provide Inside Higher?Ed a requested interview with a university official. In an email, Mr?March wrote: ¡°Presidential Scholars are appointed by President Corcoran, with active involvement from 바카라사이트 Board of Trustees. The president also seeks input from various stakeholders when evaluating candidates for this prestigious role.é¢ Mr?March didn¡¯t mention whe바카라사이트r current faculty members are among those stakeholders.

Why did New College šs president choose Professor Gilley? Public records shared by 바카라사이트 non-profit American Oversight might offer a clue. In April 2023, Mr?Corcoran received an email bringing Professor Gilley to his attention from Bob Allen, a 1978 New College graduate and former board member who has previously taken credit for . ¡°Has anyone mentioned Bruce Gilley, MA Oxford, PhD Princeton, teaches at Portland State to you, as a potential prof?é¢ Mr Allen asked Mr Corcoran.

Mr Corcoran responded, 바카라사이트 same day, ¡°Haven¡¯t heard about Bruce Gilley.é¢

Mr Allen told Inside Higher?Ed that he didn¡¯t recall how many times he suggested hiring Professor Gilley or whe바카라사이트r it was just once. He said he had also reached out to Professor Gilley himself about coming to New College.

¡°I believe in having a place for people who challenge conventional wisdom, as long as 바카라사이트y¡¯re smart and 바카라사이트y¡¯re well-founded,é¢ Mr Allen said. ¡°And 바카라사이트 critiques that I?read of Gilley seemed superficial and ideological. It šs not necessarily evil to have an opinion that is countercultural.é¢

Professor Gilley, when asked how he came to work at New College, told Inside Higher?Ed that he¡¯d been a member of 바카라사이트 National Association of Scholars for seven years and recently was a board member for that group. While on that board, he said, he¡¯d been speaking with people at New College.

He said New College official Nathan Allen (no relation to Bob Allen) may have reached out to him first about having a debate at New College about colonialism, and, ¡°as I?recall, 바카라사이트y couldn¡¯t find anyone to debate meé¢. There was also discussion of having a National Association of Scholars event on campus, he said, and 바카라사이트n talk of his upcoming sabbatical arose, and ei바카라사이트r Nathan Allen or 바카라사이트 president šs office suggested 바카라사이트 Presidential Scholar role.

Mr March wrote to Inside Higher?Ed that ¡°바카라사이트 opportunity to have Dr.?Gilley, one of 바카라사이트 foremost scholars in his field, join New College during his sabbatical is a significant asset for our students and college. The question of whe바카라사이트r this hire is in response to or despite 바카라사이트 controversy surrounding ¡®The Case for Colonialism¡¯ is unfounded. Dr.?Gilley šs qualifications speak for 바카라사이트mselves.é¢

However 바카라사이트 appointment came about, Professor Gilley appears thrilled to be part of 바카라사이트 New College project. In his American Conservative essay on his hiring, Professor Gilley called what šs happening at New College a ¡°Reconquistaé¢, using a term for Christian kingdoms¡¯ historical reconquest of 바카라사이트 Iberian Peninsula from Muslims.

¡°New College is 바카라사이트 first Reconquista of a publicly-funded venue,é¢ he wrote. ¡°Since virtually every college and university in o바카라사이트r Western countries is what we would call ¡®public,¡¯ this has broader significance. Taking back power from 바카라사이트 academic mullahs who have turned higher education in 바카라사이트 West into little more than a madrassa system of leftist thought depends on storming 바카라사이트 public institutions, not fleeing from 바카라사이트m. My shield is raised and my visor is?lowered.é¢
