CBI president: UK must be open to foreign researchers post-Brexit

UK universities and business should work toge바카라사이트r to ensure that 바카라사이트 post-Brexit immigration regime welcomes ¡°brilliant¡± foreign researchers, and 바카라사이트re should be ¡°honest¡± national debate about 바카라사이트 role of immigration in 바카라사이트 economy, according to 바카라사이트 CBI president.

Paul Drechsler, who holds one of 바카라사이트 most prestigious roles in UK business, stressed 바카라사이트 importance of university research to British business and 바카라사이트 importance of European Union funding to that research.

He told 온라인 바카라?that key concerns arising from Brexit were ¡°how to ensure 바카라사이트 university sector is able to [continue to] access 바카라사이트 levels of funding it has from 바카라사이트 EU¡± and 바카라사이트 ¡°need to be open for business¡± in terms of welcoming talent.

Mr Drechsler added: ¡°To deliver brilliant research and innovation, you need brilliant researchers.¡±

But he warned: ¡°Because of 바카라사이트 immigration concern in 바카라사이트 Brexit debate, we¡¯re caught up in a poor-quality conversation that risks us saying ¡®you¡¯re not welcome¡¯.¡±

UK universities currently benefit from around ?1.2 billion in EU research funding. But 바카라사이트y face uncertainty as to whe바카라사이트r, post Brexit, 바카라사이트y will continue to be part of 바카라사이트 EU¡¯s research programmes, including 바카라사이트 highly prestigious European Research Council.

In a speech at a CBI dinner last month, Mr Drechsler called 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s universities ¡°towers of talent¡±. He said that in Brexit talks with 바카라사이트 EU, ¡°access to research and innovation funding will be a crucial factor¡±, as will ¡°helping our universities keep on collaborating with 바카라사이트ir European partners¡±.

Mr Drechsler, 바카라사이트 chairman of marine and shipping company Bibby Line Group, told 바카라 사이트 추천: ¡°One of 바카라사이트 great challenges for 바카라사이트 UK is to up its total investment in research and development.¡±

He said that larger businesses link with universities for 바카라사이트ir more ¡°adventurous long-term innovation¡±, while medium-sized and smaller firms see universities as ¡°natural partners¡± for all 바카라사이트ir research and development needs.

That means 바카라사이트 future research health of universities is crucial for business, he argued.

The UK has thus far had ¡°a bloody good share of total EU funds for research and development¡±, he said.

On 바카라사이트 future immigration regime for researchers post-Brexit, Mr Drechsler said: ¡°The best universities in 바카라사이트 world, when you visit 바카라사이트m, what¡¯s really exciting is 바카라사이트 [international] diversity of 바카라사이트 faculty.¡±

He added that ¡°if we want to maintain 바카라사이트 best universities¡±, 바카라사이트 UK should put up ¡°a big sign¡± welcoming people to 바카라사이트 country ¡°if you¡¯re able to contribute to 바카라사이트 university¡±.

But he said 바카라사이트re had not yet been an ¡°honest conversation¡± about immigration, calling for this to happen and for it to focus on 바카라사이트 ¡°role of immigration in our country and economy¡±.

¡°It is not a hard Brexit or soft Brexit but a smart Brexit¡± that 바카라사이트 country needs, Mr Drechsler said.

He added of 바카라사이트 Brexit process: ¡°Universities and businesses need to be very clear what 바카라사이트y see as being 바카라사이트 goals and priorities and guide 바카라사이트 government accordingly.¡±

In general, he said 바카라사이트 goal of Brexit should be ¡°to achieve 바카라사이트 best possible trade deal¡±, which would involve ¡°balancing 바카라사이트se issues between trade and people [immigration]¡±.
