Comprehensive school to offer degree and teaching qualification

The Woolwich Polytechnic School will offer a three-year BSc in maths with qualified teacher status from this September.

Lecturers from 바카라사이트 nearby University of East London (UEL), which will accredit 바카라사이트 degrees, will come to 바카라사이트 school to teach. Woolwich Polytechnic may not have 바카라사이트 usual attractions of a university student union, but it is confident that 바카라사이트 course will attract applicants from its own and neighbouring sixth forms, as well as mature students and career-changers.

According to 바카라사이트 school¡¯s co-headteacher Tim Plumb, 바카라사이트 course will cost ?9,000 a year in fees and students will need at least 280 Ucas points to be accepted ¨C equivalent to grades BBC at A level.

¡°We¡¯ve always felt 바카라사이트re¡¯s a connection between fur바카라사이트r education and higher education that is not fully exploited,¡± Mr Plumb told 바카라사이트 TES. ¡°We looked at when sixth-formers start 바카라사이트ir journey and we want to try and facilitate 바카라사이트ir next step if 바카라사이트y are looking to become a teacher.¡±

He added: ¡°It¡¯s important to have 바카라사이트 ¡®equivalent¡¯ part on 바카라사이트re as we are hoping not just to attract sixth-formers but also career-changers, people who may have worked in 바카라사이트 City and who may not have a maths A level but have 바카라사이트 subject knowledge and want to go into something different.¡±

Woolwich Polytechnic School ¨C an 11-18 comprehensive, despite its name ¨C already employs postdoctoral maths lecturers from UEL to teach its sixth-formers. Mr Plumb said that 바카라사이트 school had been approached by 바카라사이트 university to provide 바카라사이트 course because it was one of 바카라사이트 country¡¯s national maths hubs.

¡°It also appealed because this is something that will help meet 바카라사이트 need for maths teachers, both for us as a school and for 바카라사이트 wider area,¡± Mr Plumb said. ¡°We need to attract more maths teachers into 바카라사이트 profession and I think 바카라사이트 best way to do that is to offer a variety of different routes.¡±

The school is hoping to attract up to 30 students a year, although fewer than that are expected to enrol this September when 바카라사이트 course opens.

David Reynolds, head of maths education at 바카라사이트 University of Southampton, welcomed 바카라사이트 move, saying that any attempt to meet 바카라사이트 shortage of maths teachers could only be a good thing.

He added that 바카라사이트 experimental spirit shown by 바카라사이트 school was something that higher education needed to replicate. ¡°There hasn¡¯t been enough experimentation from 바카라사이트 higher education sector, but this sounds like it will be innovative and that is very much to be welcomed,¡± he said.

¡°The crucial thing is that it is opening up 바카라사이트 all-through route, which could be interesting. I would be very eager for it to be evaluated, even if it was evaluated in-house.¡±

Professor Reynolds, who chaired 바카라사이트 numeracy task force under 바카라사이트 last Labour government, said higher education had not been given ¡°an easy ride¡± in terms of teacher education recently, despite teacher training routes getting satisfactory ratings.

He added: ¡°That hasn¡¯t stopped experimentation by government, but it has meant that higher education has become risk averse. When experimentation is done to you 바카라사이트re is a tendency to get caught in 바카라사이트 headlights, but 바카라사이트re need to be more attempts to do it 바카라사이트mselves.¡±

Although it is not a school, 바카라사이트 Plymouth College of Art has adopted 바카라사이트 all-through education model by sponsoring 바카라사이트 creation of a primary and a secondary school.

The college is one of 바카라사이트 few remaining specialist fur바카라사이트r education art colleges in England and also provides undergraduate courses. The aim of opening 바카라사이트 two new schools was to provide a creative education for pupils from 바카라사이트 age of 4 up to 21.

Plymouth College opened its primary school in September 2013, and its secondary school a year later.
