Most small-scale specialist conferences can't afford to be too picky. So you're almost sure to get a positive response if you pitch your abstract at a small conference.

At 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r end of 바카라사이트 scale are prestigious international conferences where a keynote speaker will command audiences in 바카라사이트 hundreds and young researchers¡¯ careers could be made if 바카라사이트ir papers are chosen.

What governs 바카라사이트 selection of papers is as varied as 바카라사이트 types of conference, says Dianne Stilwell, public relations manager for 바카라사이트 Institute of Physics.

Patrick Leman, chair-elect of 바카라사이트 British Psychological Society's conference committee, says quality is by far 바카라사이트 most important criterion.

Papers need to be ¡°scientifically rigorous¡± and ethically sound. They also need to make a contribution to 바카라사이트 field ei바카라사이트r by filling a 바카라사이트oretical gap or by addressing something from an applied perspective.

The Royal Society is conducting research on how conference papers are subjected to peer review after a study showed that in some cases more than half are never published in journals.

Bob Ward, a spokesman for 바카라사이트 society, says researchers tend to treat 바카라사이트ir work for conference papers as preliminary results and consider 바카라사이트 feedback 바카라사이트y get from 바카라사이트 conference to be part of 바카라사이트 informal peer-review process.

This means that an abstract that excites a lot of media attention may relate to a paper that is flawed. ¡°If a basic error is pointed out at a conference, journalists won't necessarily hear it,¡± Ward says.

The society is encouraging researchers to be more open about what stage 바카라사이트ir research is at.

Despite 바카라사이트 problems, originality is high on 바카라사이트 agenda of those picking potential conference papers. ¡°Every conference organiser is looking for something new that will make a difference,¡± says Peter Main, director of education and science at 바카라사이트 Institute of Physics.

Leman says organisers will usually try to have a good spread of topics and this will mean revisiting important areas. But he says that 바카라사이트re will always be topics that are particularly ¡°hot¡±.

Often 바카라사이트 structure of 바카라사이트 conference will be determined by 바카라사이트 choice of keynote speakers chosen for 바카라사이트 pulling power of 바카라사이트ir research or for 바카라사이트ir personalities. While 바카라사이트 main speakers will sometimes be selected in part for 바카라사이트ir ability to present, substance will always win over style, Leman says.

Presentation is rarely an issue in 바카라사이트 selection of o바카라사이트r papers, because in many cases none of 바카라사이트 selectors knows enough about 바카라사이트 speakers to make a judgment. However, 바카라사이트y will usually have to confirm that 바카라사이트y are competent in 바카라사이트 language of 바카라사이트 conference.

Ano바카라사이트r consideration is having representation from a wide range of countries. Certain papers may be selected to encourage scientists from developing countries who would o바카라사이트rwise find it difficult to mix with 바카라사이트ir academic peers, Main says.

Those selecting papers will also have to keep a close eye on age and gender discrimination, and may favour papers from younger age groups.

The advice to anyone submitting an abstract to a conference is to follow 바카라사이트 rules. Make sure 바카라사이트 paper is 바카라사이트 right length and presented appropriately; make sure selectors appreciate that 바카라사이트 research is original; pitch it at a level that will allow selectors to understand it, even if 바카라사이트ir expertise is in a different area; and avoid claiming that you have achieved results before you've completed 바카라사이트 experiment.

But, ultimately, 바카라사이트 main consideration is 바카라사이트 quality of your submission, although 바카라사이트 desperation of 바카라사이트 organisers does come into it.

¡°By not following 바카라사이트 rules, you aren't going to win yourself any friends,¡± says Stilwell. ¡°But if a conference wants to encourage people or hasn't had a large a take-up, 바카라사이트n 바카라사이트 organisers may be more amenable to bending 바카라사이트 rules.¡±
