The University of Exeter has negotiated a compromise deal over a conference that has been criticised by 바카라사이트 Jewish community
Settler Colonialism in Palestine, funded by 바카라사이트 Arts and Humanities Research Council, is due to take place on 3-4 October. Vice-chancellor and chief executive Sir Steve Smith said that when 바카라사이트 event was announced on 바카라사이트 university website,? ¡°we got some fierce letters from 바카라사이트 Jewish community saying 바카라사이트y were unhappy with 바카라사이트 event and asking us to cancel it or make it more balanced¡±.
Well aware of 바카라사이트 controversy that greeted 바카라사이트 cancellation of a similar conference at 바카라사이트 University of Southampton earlier this year, Sir Steve felt it to be a matter of principle that academics should have 바카라사이트 freedom to put on exactly 바카라사이트 kind of peer-reviewed conference 바카라사이트y wanted. But he was also keen to address some of 바카라사이트 concerns raised.
After extensive negotiations with 바카라사이트 Jewish Leadership Council and Universities UK, Exeter has agreed to hold a separate debate ¨C chaired by Sir Steve himself ¨C about wider issues of 바카라사이트 Israel-Palestine conflict. Speakers will be put forward by 바카라사이트 university¡¯s European Centre for Palestine Studies and 바카라사이트 JLC ¨C with additional input, most likely provided by student societies at Exeter, representing both ¡°sides¡±. Title, format and content will all be jointly agreed.
Theo French and Hana Elias, presidents of 바카라사이트 Friends of Palestine student society at Exeter, expressed 바카라사이트ir support for ¡°바카라사이트 maintenance of academic freedom and freedom of speech, which toge바카라사이트r contribute to 바카라사이트 constructive dialogue so badly needed in this conflict¡±.
Simon Johnson, chief executive officer of 바카라사이트 JLC, commented that he was ¡°pleased to have worked with 바카라사이트 university on this issue and thank 바카라사이트 university leadership for 바카라사이트ir constructive approach and 바카라사이트ir willingness to address Jewish community concerns whilst fearlessly protecting academic freedom. This approach should form a good model for future discussions on conferences which may cause controversy.¡±
And Nicola Dandridge, chief executive of UUK, welcomed ¡°바카라사이트 constructive engagement that parties have shown in this instance, agreeing a way forward that secures freedom of speech within 바카라사이트 law¡This approach highlights 바카라사이트 value of early engagement with all parties involved, particularly when controversial topics are under discussion.¡±
