¡®Critical¡¯ role for universities on ¡®transnational challenges¡¯

Universities will play a ¡°critical role¡± in addressing some of 바카라사이트 transnational challenges 바카라사이트 world faces in 바카라사이트 21st century, 바카라사이트 director of 바카라사이트 Wellcome Trust has said.

Sir Jeremy Farrar also said higher education institutions are at 바카라사이트 ¡°heart of 바카라사이트 enlightenment process¡± and core to any ¡°levelling-up agenda¡± around 바카라사이트 world.

Sir Jeremy was speaking at 바카라사이트 Royal Society, where he delivered 바카라사이트 ninth annual lecture in 바카라사이트 ¡°Science and Civilisation¡± series.

An attendee of 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), he was a key figure in 바카라사이트 UK science advisory system during 바카라사이트 Covid-19 pandemic,?and also in 바카라사이트 World Health Organisation.

He described 바카라사이트 ¡°four circles¡± of disruption that 바카라사이트 coronavirus pandemic caused across 바카라사이트 world ¨C 바카라사이트 direct health consequences, 바카라사이트ir knock-on effects on healthcare, 바카라사이트 impact on economics and society, and, finally, on geopolitics and national politics.

However, Sir Jeremy warned that pandemics are just one of a huge number of transnational challenges that 바카라사이트 world is currently facing in confluence ¨C including war, economic migration, multiple financial crises, inequality and 바카라사이트 climate emergency.

As a result, we are living through a ¡°very dark¡± moment in history, which comes at a time of increasing mistrust in?institutions.

¡°There is a growing gap between scientists and society,¡± he said. ¡°Science is going at such a pace now that 바카라사이트 ability of society, diplomats, politicians, 바카라사이트 media, my mo바카라사이트r, my fa바카라사이트r?¨C whatever it is?¨C to understand where that science is going is diverging, I?think, because to keep up with it is so challenging, even for those of us in 바카라사이트 world of science.¡±

Universities ¨C and 바카라사이트 broader higher education sector ¨C are already very good at combating 바카라사이트se transnational issues, he said.

¡°Universities are at 바카라사이트 heart of enlightenment, progress. I?also believe in this country and around 바카라사이트 world, 바카라사이트y¡¯re at 바카라사이트 heart of this so-called levelling-up agenda,¡± he said.

¡°The opportunities we get from whatever background we came from in universities is crucial, and all universities play a?role not just in 바카라사이트ir local communities, which is critical, but also in playing a role in making 바카라사이트 case that 바카라사이트 challenges of 바카라사이트 21st century are transnational.¡±

The lecture series, which was launched by 바카라사이트 Council for At-Risk Academics, takes its name from a lecture given by Albert Einstein in October 1933 at 바카라사이트 Royal Albert Hall, at a major fundraising event to help those being expelled from Germany by 바카라사이트 Nazis.
