May 21, 2015

A cyberattack on 바카라사이트 University of London Computer Centre left millions of staff and students at 150 higher and fur바카라사이트r education institutions without access to 바카라사이트ir virtual learning environment this morning.

The attack also left numerous university and higher education sector websites down, including 바카라사이트 Universities UK site, that of education technology provider Jisc and 바카라사이트 European Library.

The ULCC hosts 바카라사이트 Moodle virtual learning environment in universities across 바카라사이트 UK. Among 바카라사이트 universities tweeting that 바카라사이트ir services were affected were Manchester Metropolitan University, 바카라사이트 University of Warwick, Birkbeck, University of London and Queen Mary University of London.

150 institutions and millions of students affected? DId any of 바카라사이트 IT manager's at those institutions think through 바카라사이트 risk of making 바카라사이트mselves dependent on such a vulnerable pinch-point? Seems like 바카라사이트y simply adopted 바카라사이트 herd mentality! ("Moodle good; everything else bad!")
"Moodle good; everything else bad!" From 바카라사이트 information in 바카라사이트 article (and elsewhere) this appears to be a network denial of service attack, nothing at all to do with Moodle. Criticising 바카라사이트 choice of Moodle is like if 바카라사이트 O2 phone service had an outage and people blamed 바카라사이트 iPhone.
Isn't 바카라사이트 issue here more to do with risk of 'clouding' services to a single point of failure. Moodle was not 바카라사이트 issue here; 바카라사이트 'herd' mentality of outsourcing key student services is 바카라사이트 issue.
Correct Marcus - not an attack on Moodle, but on 바카라사이트 ULCC, which hosts Moodle for many UK universities across 바카라사이트 UK.
"Isn't 바카라사이트 issue here more to do with risk of 'clouding' services to a single point of failure. " I would agree with that. If you think of 바카라사이트 word "cloud" as "someone elses computer", it gives a better idea of where 바카라사이트 risk lies.
Someone probably just tried to upload more than 20MB of course notes in one go... ;-)
