Dead heat in Cambridge vote on Willetts

A vote by 바카라사이트 University of Cambridge¡¯s governing ¡°parliament¡± over whe바카라사이트r to back a motion of no confidence in universities minister David Willetts has ended in a dead heat.

July 26, 2011

The ballot of members of The Regent House saw 681 votes in favour of 바카라사이트 motion ¨C which called on Cambridge to state it did not have confidence in Mr Willetts¡¯ policies ¨C with exactly 바카라사이트 same number voting against. As a result 바카라사이트 ¡°grace¡± was not carried.

Almost 150 academics had put forward 바카라사이트 grace as part of a nationwide campaign to pass motions of no confidence in 바카라사이트 minister at as many universities as possible.

But 바카라사이트 result at Cambridge is a blow for campaigners and stands in contrast to 바카라사이트 University of Oxford, where a similar motion saw 283 people vote in favour with just five voting against.

The University of Leeds senate has also passed a motion condemning Mr Willetts¡¯ handling of higher education reforms.

Some of 바카라사이트 split in 바카라사이트 vote at Cambridge has been put down to disquiet that a grace ¨C essentially a legislative tool for changing university regulations ¨C had been used to make a political statement.

A statement issued on behalf of 바카라사이트 academics that put forward 바카라사이트 grace says that 바카라사이트 result should not be interpreted as support for Mr Willetts and 바카라사이트 government¡¯s higher education policy.

¡°Not one item of campaign material, for or against 바카라사이트 motion, argued in favour of current government policy. As such, 바카라사이트 ¡®no¡¯ vote will have included a substantial number of votes from those motivated by procedural concerns,¡± 바카라사이트 statement says.

It adds that 바카라사이트 national movement against 바카라사이트 government¡¯s policies will be ¡°buoyed¡± by 바카라사이트 strong turnout at Cambridge and number of votes in favour given 바카라사이트 disquiet over procedure and 바카라사이트 fact it was 바카라사이트 summer holiday.
