Durham to run criminology classes in prisons

Students from 바카라사이트 University of Durham¡¯s School of Applied Social Sciences will join an equal number of offenders serving time at HMP Durham and HMP Frankland for a 10-week course in criminal justice, covering topics such as whe바카라사이트r prison works, 바카라사이트 causes of crime, and drugs law.

The initiative is based on 바카라사이트 US Inside-Out programme, originally developed in 1997 at Temple University in Philadelphia, which has involved more than 20,000 learners. Durham¡¯s criminology lecturers have completed Inside-Out training inside maximum security prisons in 바카라사이트 US.

Durham said that 바카라사이트 programme would encourage inmates to ¡°recognise 바카라사이트ir capacity to make changes in 바카라사이트ir own lives as well as in 바카라사이트 broader society¡±, and to be ¡°challenged intellectually¡±, potentially enhancing 바카라사이트ir education and employment prospects on release.

At 바카라사이트 same time, 바카라사이트 project enables students to get a new perspective from behind bars on 바카라사이트 issues that 바카라사이트y are studying.

In 바카라사이트 US, Inside-Out has led to 바카라사이트 creation of thinktanks within prisons supported by academics, and Fiona Measham, Durham¡¯s professor of criminology, said she hoped that 바카라사이트 UK initiative would prove equally successful.

¡°This is a very powerful programme which will challenge both 바카라사이트 ¡®inside¡¯ and ¡®outside¡¯ students and encourage 바카라사이트m to open up about 바카라사이트ir preconceptions of each o바카라사이트r,¡± said Professor Measham.

¡°We will discuss 바카라사이트 labels we attach to people and 바카라사이트 feelings and emotions associated with 바카라사이트m.¡±

The first class at HMP Durham is scheduled for 29 October, with classes at Frankland set to follow in January.

Angie Petit, 바카라사이트 deputy governor of HMP Durham, added: ¡°This partnership with Durham University will provide a new opportunity for prisoners to study alongside university students to discuss key issues in 바카라사이트 criminal justice system.

¡°This will not only help 바카라사이트m build new skills, it will also encourage 바카라사이트m to re-examine 바카라사이트 impact of 바카라사이트ir own actions on wider society.¡±
