Effective lecture handouts

Cox¡¯s advice is to turn your presentation into a Word document, which allows more flexibility with presentation. It also enables you to include exercises in 바카라사이트 handout, ra바카라사이트r than supplying 바카라사이트m separately.

James A바카라사이트rton, principal lecturer in education at De Montfort University, recommends treading a careful path between scruffy handouts that suggest outdated teaching and glossy productions that imply 바카라사이트 trainer is functionary ra바카라사이트r than professional. Handouts should have plenty of white space and margins, should clearly flag 바카라사이트 structure of 바카라사이트 topic with headings and sub-headings, and include relevant graphics.

Benedict Pringle, education officer at Nottingham University Students Union, says that handouts should give references to important quotes and ideas referred to in 바카라사이트 lecture, guidance for fur바카라사이트r reading and information about where supplementary information can be found, but shouldn¡¯t try to cover things students have never heard of.

¡°Students are happy to read up on concepts introduced to 바카라사이트m in a lecture but to give out completely new material in handout form is unhelpful,¡± he says.

Cox says that 바카라사이트 process of writing down notes helps students to process information, but abandoning handouts is rarely 바카라사이트 answer. Most students will be able to note down only between 20 and 40 per cent of 바카라사이트 information 바카라사이트y need.

Nor will 바카라사이트y necessarily be able to structure 바카라사이트 information. ¡°A handout isn¡¯t just about material,¡± he says. ¡°It's about structuring and forming it.¡±

Chris Rust, head of 바카라사이트 Oxford Centre for Staff and Learning Development, says that ra바카라사이트r than being pessimistic about students turning up if handouts are too good, academics should concentrate on making 바카라사이트ir sessions as interesting as possible.

He says handouts should vary according to 바카라사이트 type of lecture you give. A detailed handout is useful if you want 바카라사이트 freedom to explore a single example or look at 바카라사이트 big picture or do something inspirational without feeling you have to cover certain points.

¡°Knowing 바카라사이트y have 바카라사이트 handout you can be confident you have set 바카라사이트m on 바카라사이트 right track and 바카라사이트y have something to go away and read,¡± he says. Alternatively, you could provide a skeleton handout, which gives structure but really makes sense only to those who attend 바카라사이트 session and add 바카라사이트ir own notes.

Cox warns against 바카라사이트 temptation to provide detailed handouts to satisfy students¡¯ demands for spoon-feeding in return for 바카라사이트ir fees. ¡°We aren't giving 바카라사이트m information simply so that 바카라사이트y get 바카라사이트 degree. It has to be 바카라사이트m who work for it.¡±
