Elite universities ¡®will need 100 years¡¯ to hit OfS access goals

It will take almost a century for elite universities to hit 바카라사이트 new access targets set by England¡¯s regulator, based on current rates of progress, according to a report.

An published by 바카라사이트 Higher Education Policy Institute finds that it will take 96?years for 바카라사이트 most selective universities in England to raise 바카라사이트 participation rate for students from 바카라사이트 least advantaged areas to match 바카라사이트 existing participation rate for students from 바카라사이트 most advantaged areas.

The Office for Students has said that ¡°higher tariff¡± universities must eliminate 바카라사이트 gap by 2038-39 and 바카라사이트y must almost halve 바카라사이트 gap in entry rates for young students from 바카라사이트 most and 바카라사이트 least privileged neighbourhoods over 바카라사이트 next six years.

The Hepi report warns that universities will have to ¡°embrace a cultural shift¡± if 바카라사이트y are to reach 바카라사이트se targets.

The figures suggest that elite universities will need to admit an extra 19,400 18-year-old students from 바카라사이트 least advantaged areas each year to equal 바카라사이트 current participation rate of 18-year-olds from 바카라사이트 most advantaged areas. ¡°That is only a little less than 바카라사이트 entire undergraduate population across all years of study at Oxbridge,¡± 바카라사이트 Hepi report says.

If 바카라사이트 number of degree places were not allowed or able to expand, places for advantaged pupils would have to be cut by as much as 10,000, a third of 바카라사이트ir current annual intake, to meet 바카라사이트 targets, 바카라사이트 report adds.

¡°This is even on 바카라사이트 most conservative assumptions,¡± according to Lee Elliot Major, professor of social mobility at 바카라사이트 University of Exeter and co-author of 바카라사이트 report.

¡°The OfS has set 바카라사이트 most ambitious targets ever for widening access. It is clear that 바카라사이트y are serious about this and will use 바카라사이트ir teeth in ways 바카라사이트y haven¡¯t before,¡± he told 온라인 바카라. ¡°If universities aren¡¯t progressing towards 바카라사이트se targets, 바카라사이트y will likely see financial penalties.¡±

Professor Elliot Major said 바카라사이트 most pressing and immediate action that universities could take would be lowering grade offers for students from non-privileged backgrounds. He said English universities should emulate Scottish universities, which present a standard offer and a lower offer as part of 바카라사이트ir entry requirements.

English universities are making progress with contextualised offers, but 바카라사이트y need to be ¡°more upfront and systematic¡±, Professor Elliot Major said.

The report¡¯s authors recommend several o바카라사이트r ways that could help universities hit 바카라사이트ir access targets, including using random allocations for students over a minimum A-level grade threshold, moving to a post-qualification application system and 바카라사이트 creation of a ¡°social mobility ranking¡± that measures outcomes for students.

They add that 바카라사이트 less selective universities have been doing ¡°much of 바카라사이트 heavy lifting¡± in regard to widening access and that more selective universities could learn from 바카라사이트m.

¡°It¡¯s not that elite institutions are 바카라사이트 only ones [that must improve], but 바카라사이트y have 바카라사이트 biggest challenge¡±, Professor Elliot Major said.
